WHEELING W.Va. - The Wheeling Jesuit Men's Basketball team fell to the Golden Eagles of Charleston University in the Alma Grace McDonough Center on Monday by a score of 64-56.
With the loss to Charleston, Wheeling Jesuit falls to 1-2 on the season, and 1-1 in the Mountain East Conference. Charleston improves to 4-1, with a 1-1 record in the conference.
The Cardinal's fell behind early by only netting fifteen points in the first half. Charleston took the early advantage and carried a twelve-point, 27-15 lead into the half.
Charleston was led by Xavier Humphreys, who scored a game high 34 points, tallying 26 of those 34 in the second half.
The Cardinal's were led by their 6'4'' point guard
Eric Siefert, who scored a team high 17 points, and pulled down 9 rebounds. Sophomore guard
Justin Fritts followed with 13 points, and junior forward
Steve Bridgeman contributed 11 points off of the bench.
The Cardinal's began the second half in a hole by falling behind by 18 points early. The Golden Eagles held onto their double digit lead until the two minute mark, when
Eric Siefert knocked down two big free-throws, cutting the Golden Eagles lead to eight.
A clutch three pointer by
Steve Bridgeman with 53 seconds remaining on the clock cut the lead to six.
Justin Fritts netted two free throws with 46 seconds left on the clock, following a turnover by Charleston. Down the stretch, the Cardinal's had three costly turnovers as the clock ran down, and their comeback came to a halt. Charleston then hung onto their lead, and went on to win by eight points.
"We didn't play well, but we continued to play hard," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We just didn't execute. They bullied us off screens, and Humphrey's really took over. They were definitely the better team tonight."
The Wheeling Jesuit Men's basketball team will be back in action on Friday, November 29th, when they compete in the Gannon University tournament against Alderson Broaddus University. The contest begins at 5:30 p.m.
