WJU Basketball Gets First Win of Season

Box Score
The Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball program secured their first win of the season on Saturday, shooting 48 percent from the field to take an 87-71 victory from the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets on the road.

WJU rebounded from their opening night loss to #9 Findlay, and now sits 1-1 in the early days of the season, and move to 1-0 in Mountain East Conference play.

"I think we grew up as far as following the game plan better and we did a good job in transition," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We struggled in transition in the first game. We were able to get back on defense and make things happen in our end of the court tonight."

The Cardinals enjoyed big nights from three of their standouts, including a double-double from Justin Fritts who had 30 points and 10 assists, and 17 points and 5 steals from Eric Siefert.

Freshman Matt Stewart out of North Huntingdon, Penn, came off the bench with "all kinds of energy" according to Coach Sancomb, and went 8-13 from the field for 19 points to lead the Cardinals reserves.

"We'll enjoy this win tonight, but tomorrow our minds will fall onto Charleston," added Sancomb. "I think it's important for our confidence we just win games at this point in the season. I think that's what's our young basketball team needs right now."

The Cardinals will face MEC opponent at home on Monday in a WJU basketball double header. The men take the court at 7:30pm.
