Cardinal Spikers Sweep the Cavaliers in Straight Sets

Box Score WHEELING, W. Va. - The Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team cruised to a 3-sets-to-nil victory over the visiting Virginia-Wise Cavaliers Friday evening in Mountain East Conference play in Wheeling.

With the victory, the Cardinals tallied their 15th straight win, and move to 16-3 overall, just past the halfway point of the season. Good enough to retain 1st place in the MEC.

In front of a loud pep band and raucous crowd, WJU came out of the blocks firing in the first set running out to a 9-2 early lead, and finishing the set with a 25-11 win.

The second set was much the same story, with the Cardinals dominating early, and finishing off the 25-12 victory. The Cavaliers pushed WJU in the 3rd and final set, battling the Cards to a 22-22 draw before WJU took the final 3 points of the match to win 25-22.

The Cardinals were led with a balanced offensive attack from a stellar group of freshmen, receiving 8 kills from Emma Schleucher and Kayce Krucki, closely followed by Haley Kindall who had 7 kills on the night. Last week's MEC player of the Week Jenna Pew, the senior from Marshallville, Ohio spread the attack with 18 assists to her name.

WJU hits the road next week with MEC matchups against Shepard University and Fairmont State on October 11th and 15th, respectively. The Cardinals then return home to WJU for 5 straight home games between the 19th and 26th of the month.
