WJU Men’s Soccer Scores Strong Win Over Shepherd

Box Score
BETHANY, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit Men's soccer team got back into the win column with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Shepherd University Rams on Thursday. Due to heavy rains, the match was played on Bethany College's all-weather turf field at Bison Stadium.

With the win, the Cardinals snapped a 4 game lose/tie streak, and improve to 4-5-4 (3-3-3 in the MEC). Shepherd remains at the bottom of the MEC table with a 2-10-1 overall record (0-8-1 in MEC).

WJU's David Healy, the freshman from Derry, N. Ireland led the Cardinals with an overall productive day highlighted by a pair of goals, an assist, and six shots on goal. Also getting on the scoreboard for WJU was fellow freshman Aitor DeHeredia out of Bilboa, Spain who scored in the 87th minute.

While WJU coach Jim Regan is happy to take the win, he still feels his team has yet to play a complete match.

"I thought we didn't play as well tonight as we did in games we lost," said Regan.
"The difference tonight was getting the second insurance goal that gave us the confidence to finish the game off. Now we must try to put both in action for Saturday at Concord."

The first Cardinal goal came off the boot of Healy in the 18th on a rebound off the goalie from a saved shot. A scrum of bodies scrambled for the ball, and Healy found the back of the net.

Healy followed up his first half goal with another in the 64th minute. The movement was started by #17 Brandon Waugerman, the sophomore from Kingwood, W.Va. who made a brilliant breakaway down the sideline and struck a hard shot on goal. The Shepherd goalie made a brilliant save, but Healy was there to put the rebound into the net.

The final WJU goal came when DeHeredia received a long cross-pass from Healy placed it nicely above the keeper at mid-net to put the Cardinals up 3-0 for good.

The Cardinals next take the field on the road against Mountain East Conference foe Concord on Saturday, October 19th.
