WHEELING, W.Va.---This weekend featured three games for Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals hockey. Friday and Saturday's games were a double header against Dennison University while Sunday's game was a heated battle against rival West Liberty University. All three games were decided in the last minute with the Cardinals coming out of the weekend with only one win.
The first game of the double header against Dennison was a tight matchup that saw the Cardinals take a 3-1 lead in the second period. However, Dennison erased the deficit in only a few minutes and eventually took a 4-3 lead. Freshman
Landon Baker tied the game in the final seconds to send it into overtime. Neither team scored in the five minute overtime, so there was a shootout to decide the winner. The Cardinals were able to score on two of their three attempts, including a Datsyukian deke from Baker, but Dennison converted on all three of their attempts to take the win.
Saturday's game was also nail bitter from the start. The back and forth action that marked Friday's game continued the next day. At 3-3, the game seemed to be headed to another overtime when Sophomore
Jared Gillespie stopped a clearing attempt and fired a slap shot into the back of the net with one second remaining to secure the win for Wheeling Jesuit.
Sunday's game against West Liberty was no different than the past two games. The Cardinals were able to take a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Hilltoppers countered to go up 3-1. The Cardinals had to play catch up the whole and could not gain the advantage as every goal they scored would be answered by goal from the Hilltoppers. The final nail in the coffin occurred when Zach Stahl, forward for West Liberty, scored an empty net goal to seal the win.
