West Liberty, W. Va. – After waiting nearly two hours for storms to pass through the Ohio Valley, Thursday's West Liberty Invitational was cancelled due to weather. The Wheeling University Cross Country team will not make up this particular event, but will look to possibly add a replacement meet down the road, which will be announced at a later date. The young Cardinals will continue their preseason training, with their next race being scheduled on Friday, September 11, when they run at the Robert Morris Invitational.

Heading into the race, the women were looking to senior Madison Conrad to lead the way, after a breakout season in 2025. Conrad set several PR's during the year, and was just three spots shy of earning an All-Mountain East Conference honor at last year's MEC Cross Country Championships. On the men's side, Redick Moore looked to lead the Cardinals, coming back from injury that forced him to miss the entire 2025 season. Wheeling will look to add another regional context to make up for missing their opening run.

The Wheeling University Men's and Women's Cross Country teams return to the course on Friday, September 11, when they run at the Robert Morris Invitational.
