Wheeling, W. Va. – Over the last two seasons, the Wheeling University Women's Lacrosse program has come back with a bang, reaching the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Semifinals in each of its first two seasons back. On Thursday, the Wheeling University Athletic Department announced the next leader of the program, naming Maisy Latus as the new Head Women's Lacrosse Coach, the fourth in program history. Latus has played a major role in the revitalization of the program as both a student-athlete and graduate assistant over the last two seasons and now looks to continue that impact as head coach.
"I am incredibly honored and excited to be named the Head Women's Lacrosse Coach at Wheeling University," said Latus. "I'm grateful to Carrie Hanna and the entire athletic department for believing in me and trusting me to lead this program. Having been part of this program since it was restarted as both a student-athlete and a graduate assistant, it has been incredibly rewarding to help build the team's culture and identity. I'm excited to continue developing this program, supporting our student-athletes, and building a team that competes with excellence while representing Wheeling University with pride."
After wrapping up her playing career with the Cardinals, Latus moved into a graduate assistant role with the team during the 2026 season. She served as the team's primary goalkeeper coach while working directly with the defense throughout the season. Her goalkeeper unit ranked as the top group in the MEC, finishing with a conference-best 200 saves while posting the league's third-best save percentage (.457). She helped lead a Cardinal defense that allowed just 12.53 goals per game and held opponents to a .736 shots-on-goal percentage. Under her guidance, sophomore goalkeeper Giavonna Perkins earned First Team All-MEC honors and was named the MEC Goalie of the Year for the first time in her career.
Prior to joining the coaching staff, Latus played one season in goal for the Cardinals after transferring from Davenport University. She appeared in 11 games, making eight starts during the 2025 season, while recording 102 saves and finishing with a .449 save percentage. She posted a season-high 18 saves against Shepherd and reached double-digit saves in four games. Latus helped the Cardinals advance to the MEC Semifinals, where she recorded nine saves on 18 shots faced for a .500 save percentage. She began her collegiate career at Davenport University, where she played three seasons and earned Second Team All-Conference honors as a junior.
"Maisy Latus has been a big part of the Women's Lacrosse program's turnaround, and we are thrilled to have her as the new Head Women's Lacrosse Coach," said Wheeling University Director of Athletics Carrie Hanna. "She has exemplified what it means to be a Cardinal both as a player and as a coach, and we look forward to seeing her continue to build that Cardinal culture within our Women's Lacrosse program."
Her coaching journey has also spanned multiple sports at Wheeling. Latus served as the Women's Rugby graduate assistant during the Cardinals' 2024 National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) National Championship run. She was responsible for all team logistics, including travel, meals, and gameday management, helping lead the Cardinals to the NCR National Championship in the program's first season. During the spring of 2025, she also worked as a graduate assistant in the Wheeling Athletics Sports Information Department, helping cover the university's spring sports.
Latus is from West Henrietta, New York. She graduated from Davenport University with a bachelor's degree in sports management in May 2024 before earning her Master of Business Administration from Wheeling University in May 2026.
