Wheeling, W. Va. – With the spring sports seasons coming to an end, the postseason is in full swing for the Wheeling University Athletic Department Spring Sports teams. On Tuesday, the department announced their weekly Cardinal High Flyer of the Week Awards, and it was a pair of strong end of season performances that took home the honors. Wheeling Women's Lacrosse Player Trinity Rose was named the Female High Flyer of the Week, while Baseball player Sebastian Kahn won the Male High Flyer of the Week award.
The final week of April would start off right away with postseason play, with Wheeling Women's Lacrosse traveling to Frostburg State for the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Semifinals. They would keep things close early on with the favored Bobcats, but in the end, the Cardinals fell 17-9 to end their postseason run. On that same day, the final weekend of the Softball regular season kicked off, with Wheeling Softball traveling to Salem. The Cardinals would win the weekend opener 9-8 in a back and forth game, before the Tigers took game two 9-0.
On Friday, they would finish the MEC portion of the schedule, taking on Point Park and dropping the first game of a rain-shortened doubleheader 13-8. Wheeling Baseball would get their weekend started on Friday, earning two wins on senior day, including the first No-Hitter in program history. Track & Field would begin their last chance schedule Friday at the Jesse Owens Classic, and had three top 15 finishes. The weekend rounded off for Wheeling Baseball at West Liberty, where they picked up an 8-6 game one win, before dropping game two 8-5 to round out the regular season. In the effort, they claimed the MEC North Division title for the first time since 2021 and earned the Co-MEC Regular season championship, splitting the honor with Frostburg State.
Trinity Rose is taking home her first Cardinal High Flyer of the Week award of the season, after leading her team in their MEC semifinal game against Frostburg State. The junior midfielder finished with four goals and two assists, totaling a team-high six points to lead the offensive effort. She was the Cardinal's leading shooter, putting six of the eight shots she took on net, and continued a string of success that has seen her score 25 goals and eight assists over her final six games of the season. Along with her offensive success, Rose would lead the defense as well finishing with three caused turnovers, while tying for the team lead with three ground balls. She rounded out her postseason honors earlier this week, earning the MEC's Midfielder of the Year as she continued to be a leader for the Cardinals on the field.
Sebastian Khan is also earning his first Cardinal High Flyer of the Week honor of the season, after being a part of Cardinal program history. Khan would combine with two of his teammates to throw the first no-hitter in program history. Khan would get the start, throwing 4.1 innings allowing just one walk while striking out four batters. He would end up earning his ninth win of the season in the effort, breaking the program's single-season win record in the process. Khan has established himself as one of the top pitchers in the MEC this season, leading the way with the lowest ERA among eligible pitchers at 2.32, while also leading the conference in opponent batting average (.181) and innings pitched (77.1) while sitting second in the conference with 82 strikeouts on the season. He will take the ball in the Cardinal's opener against Glenville State, and looks to continue to be a leader into the postseason.
Rose takes home the third High Flyer of the Week honor of the season for Women's Lacrosse, while Khan earns the fifth such award for Wheeling Baseball. Rose joins teammates Sophia Cirone and Jovie Noack being honored, while Khan joins teammates Edward Mateo, Brock Elliott, Gavin Millians, and Mason Fenwick in earning honors this season. Due to last week's schedule, no award was given, but two weeks ago Wheeling Softball player Keke Warrix and Baseball player Mason Fenwick were honored.
The next Wheeling University Athletic event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 6th, when the Wheeling Baseball team opens MEC Tournament play against #3S Glenville State with first pitch at 3:30 PM.
