Softball Looks to Right the Ship Against Malone

Wheeling, W. Va- The Wheeling University Softball team (7-25), (2-9) suffered a tough offensive weekend, falling to Fairmont State and Frostburg State before the start of Easter Break. The team totaled 14 hits last weekend and were able to get a run across each contest. The Cardinals will be looking to improve at the plate in their next matchup and to fine tune their lineup before they begin the long Mountain East Conference (MEC) stretch.

KeKe Warrix was the most consistent hitter for the Cardinals, going 3-7 at the plate across the three games she was in while also picking up a double. The senior from Indianapolis has been an important piece to the Cardinal offense, sitting top 20 in the MEC among hitters with a .358 batting average, and she is 15th in the league with 34 hits this season. Among the Cardinal hitters, Mackenzie Burns leads the team with a .373 batting average coupled with 31 hits, two home runs, and 14 RBIs. Warrix sits behind her, and Ava Kresak rounds out the .300 club with a .321 average on the season.

The Matchup

The Malone Pioneers have had a terrific start to their season in the Great-Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), starting 18-8 and have amassed a 5-3 conference record. More impressively, they are a perfect 8-0 when hosting other teams so far this season. The Pioneers are coming off the losing end of a sweep against Tiffin, falling 2-1 in game one and 7-0 in game two. Malone is led by junior catcher/first basemen Sidney Conti, who is batting .371 and has 23 hits and nine RBIs. The team boasts two aces: junior Mia Rose and freshman Summer McCaw. Rose is 10-4 on the season with a 2.01 ERA while McCaw is 4-2 and has a 2.05 ERA.

Malone is 3-0 against Wheeling since their first game in 2019. The last two times they played were on February 25th, 2025, when Malone earned an 11-0 shutout win in game one and a 9-1 victory in game two.
