Box Score 1 Wheeling, W. Va. - On the final day of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Softball schedule, the Wheeling University Softball Team (11-40, 5-22) traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for their final conference doubleheader with Point Park. The Cardinals needed a doubleheader sweep with the Pioneers and a Davis & Elkins sweep of Concord to make the 2026 MEC Tournament. However, Wheeling dropped game one 13-8, before game two was postponed in the bottom of the third due to weather.
Game One: Point Park 13, Wheeling 8
In the first game of the day, the Cardinal bats would get things going right away in what would be an offensive battle. Madison Kay would get things started with a lead-off double, and Kaylin Shields would follow up with a double of her own and the Cardinals would jump out to a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Mackenzie Burns would draw a walk to put runners on the corners with one out. It brought Grace Mummery to the plate and she lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Shields and give her a 2-0 lead before she took the circle. However, the Pioneers had some life of their own, putting three runs up in the bottom half to take a 3-2 lead heading to the second inning. The Cardinals bats went right to the bat racks and retook the lead in the top of the second.
Eden Troxel would get things started with a one-out walk and a fielder's choice plus a Pioneer error put runners at first and second with one away. Kay followed with a fielder's choice of her own, and with two outs there were runners at the corners for Shields. Kay would end up taking second, before Shields sent one past the short stop into left to bring home both runners and put the Cardinals back out in front 4-3. With the lead in hand, Shields would face just four batters in the bottom of the second, but Point Park would get right back on their horse with a three-spot in the bottom of the third and they took back the lead at 6-4. They would tack on another run with a solo home run by Mia Arndt and the score sat at 7-4 heading to the top of the fifth. The Cardinals got things going once again, this time with back-to-back singles from Burns and Mummery to put runners at first and second with nobody out.
Two batters later, Riley Pearlman would single through the left side to bring home Burns and the Cardinals cut into the Point Park lead at 7-5. In the top of the sixth the Cardinals would get that deficit down to one after Kay reached on a one-out triple. Shields would follow with a sacrifice fly to bring home Kay and make it a 7-6 game heading to the bottom of the sixth. That's when Point Park would ice the game, scoring six runs and expanding their lead to 13-6 heading to the top of the sixth. The Cardinals would continue to fight until the end, with Burns and Mummery once again starting things with back-to-back singles, before a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one out. Pearlman would drive in her second run of the game with an RBI single, and Troxel would lift a sacrifice fly to bring home the final run of the game. Wheeling would fall 13-8, officially eliminating them from playoff contention.
It was a big day for the Cardinal offense, with Kaylin Shields leading the way with a 2-4 effort with four RBI. She was responsible for each of the first four Cardinal runs of the game, while throwing 3.0 innings and giving up seven runs in the circle. Riley Pearlman would add a multi RBI day, finishing 3-4 with a pair of RBI, while Grace Mummery and Eden Troxel each finished with an RBI in the effort. Madison Kay would round out the effort, going 3-4 with a triple at the top of the lineup
Game 2: Postponed BOT 3rd Point Park 14, Wheeling 2
The Cardinals and Pioneers would start game two before the rains started to fall down. Just as they did in game one, the Cardinals once again jumped out to an early lead in game two. It was once again Madison Kay who started things with a single and got all the way to third on back-to-back wild pitches and the Cardinals had a runner 60-feet away from scoring. It would be Kaylin Shields bringing her home with an RBI single and the Cardinals took the early 1-0 lead. Riley Pearlman followed with a walk, and two batters later, Mummery singled home Shields to make it a 2-0 game. However, the Pioneer offense was relentless, putting up 14 runs over the next three innings before the game was called.
The second game of the doubleheader will only be made up if it is determined that it is needed for play-off contention. If it is not, the game will go down as a no-contest as the teams did not reach the fifth inning.
