Wheeling, W. Va. – After taking a break due to weather on Saturday, the Wheeling University Baseball team (29-10, 15-3) returns to Mylan Park on Sunday. They wrap up their four-game series with Fairmont State in doubleheader action with first pitch at 1 PM. Wheeling will be looking to make history in the Doubleheader, with one win helping them break the single-season win record and a sweep clinching them a spot in the 2026 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Tournament.
The first two games of the series were ruled by the Cardinal offense, who scored a combined 23 runs between the two games. Wheeling would get on the board first in the top of the first in game one, and they would never look back. They scored four or more runs in three or the seven innings in game one, backing another strong starting pitching performance. Wheeling would start the weekend with a 15-0 win and looked to keep the momentum going as they headed into game two. After both teams were held off the board in the first inning, the Cardinal bats just kept swinging as they continued to pour it on. Wheeling put up at least one run in five straight innings as they built their lead. They would go on to win 8-0, earning the sweep of the day and moving to 15-3 in conference play.
Masked behind the offensive success was strong starting pitching from Sebastian Khan and Mason Fenwick. Khan would open the weekend and delivered 6.1 strong innings on the mound. He would allow just one hit, while walking two and striking out six. He would pick-up four 1-2-3 innings on the day and lowered his season ERA to 1.84 across 68.1 in innings of work. He has one of the lowest ERA among starting pitchers in the lead and has anchored a strong Cardinal staff. Mason Fenwick followed behind him and put together a career-best effort in game two. Fenwick would throw 6.1 innings as well, allowing two hits while walking one and striking out four. As they head into Sunday's final two games, the Cardinals look to continue their starting pitching success to back a strong offensive effort.
On the offensive side, senior Edward Mateo was the spark plug at the top of the order, piloting the 15-run game one effort. The senior finished with six RBI, including two home runs as the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead. He started the game with a bang on the first pitch, sending a solo home run over the center field wall and hit a three-run bomb later in the contest. It was his first two home run game of the season, as he led the Cardinals. In game two, it was Nicholas Schulz leading the way, driving in three of his teams eight runs. Schulz big hit was a two RBI double that opened the scoring and led Wheeling to the win. The 23 runs were the most scored in a single doubleheader by the Cardinals this season as they look for the sweep today.
If the Cardinals sweep the Sunday portion of the doubleheader, Wheeling will be the first team in the conference to clinch their spot in the 2026 MEC Baseball Tournament. Wheeling is looking to make their first trip to the tournament since the 2024 season, when they finished as the #2 seed in the MEC North Division. Along with clinching a playoff spot, just one win on the day helps the team break the single season win record. They tied the previous mark of 29 with a doubleheader sweep on Friday and look to write this team's name in the record books. Wheeling will be looking to win their fifth straight weekend, including back-to-back to start Divisional play with a win.
First pitch for today's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 PM at Mylan Park in Morgantown, West Virginia.
