Wheeling Men’s and Women’s Rugby Set to Learn CRC National 7’s Fate Saturday in CRC National 7’s Selection Show

Wheeling, W. Va. – After battling through their 7's schedule, the Wheeling University Men's and Women's Rugby teams are preparing for a postseason run. The teams will learn their postseason date on Saturday night with the Collegiate Rugby Championships (CRC) National 7's Selection Show. The show will air on Saturday, April 18th, at 7 PM on the College Rugby Show's YouTube channel, and will feature the seedings and match-ups for both the Men's and Women's Brackets.

Both programs would make the CRC National 7's tournament a season ago, and both are looking for a return trip to Boyds, Maryland. The Men would enter the tournament as the defending CRC National 7's Champions, and made their case to repeat right away. The offense would take charge with back-to-back 30-point games in their first two meetings, while the defense allowed 20 total points as the Cardinals went 3-0 on day one. They advanced to the semifinals against Queens University of Charlotte, and earned a 38-12 win to advance to the National title game. They would end up battling St. Bonaventure in what was the toughest match-up of the tournament, but they walked away with the 19-5 victory. The effort made the Cardinals back-to-back National Champions, solidifying their name in tournament history.

During the 2026 7's season, the Cardinals have entered the year looking for a three-peat, and have been firing on all cylinders throughout the spring. They started the season at the Queens Cup and, after tying with Indiana in the opener, they would finish the tournament 3-1-1, rounding out the tournament with an impressive 24-0 win over Queens University of Charlotte. Up next was the Ruck the Rock Tournament, where the Cardinals would pick up their first tournament win of the season. After going 3-0 in pool play, Wheeling would beat the University of Notre Dame in the semifinals and ultimately beat Dartmouth 24-12 to win the tournament championship. They would round out the regular season at the Fighting Irish 7's Qualifier, and guaranteed their spot on the National stage with a tournament win. They would meet up with rival Walsh, and picked up a 33-12 win to earn the tournament win. Wheeling is looking for a three-peat in this year's tournament as they once again defend their National title.

For the women, it was their inaugural 7's season and, after winning the National title in the fall, they were looking to sweep the National title scene for the year. They would make their National Championship debut against Bowdoin College in what was a defensive battle. The Cardinals would come out on top 19-5 for their first 7's National Tournament win and advanced to the quarterfinal round. There, they would meet their nemesis from the regular season, American International College (AIC), and fell 31-14 to fall out of the National Championship bracket. They would come back in the consolation bracket and would take on the University of New Haven. They picked up a 17-12 win, before bowing out of the tournament with a 34-12 loss to Queens University of Charlotte, bringing their inaugural season to an end.

The women would start their 2026 7's season at the Valley 7's, where they rolled through pool play with a 3-0 record. They got to the championship match, but fell 27-12 to go 3-1 over their first tournament. They followed that up with a trip to the Cavalier 7's, where they were once again perfect in Pool Play. They would head to the semifinals, where they battled Michigan, who had won the National title in 2024. They would earn a 33-7 win to advance to the championship match, but they fell to Davenport 29-0 to round out their second tournament. Their final tournament appearance of the year came in the 7's in the Swamp Tournament, which was played in round robin action. They would earn two wins over Kent State, and a win over Ohio Wesleyan to round out the season. They will look to compete for their first 7's title on the National stage.
