Wheeling, W. Va. - It was a big weekend of Atlantic Regional play for the Wheeling University Baseball team (27-9, 13-3) as they welcomed in Frostburg State. The Cardinals would end up winning their fourth straight weekend, taking three of four from the Bobcats, and the Cardinals were honored as the conference announced their weekly Player of the Week honors, presented by the Healthplan. After a pair of clutch performances on the second day, Wheeling Designated Hitter Luke Meyer was named the MEC's Co-Hitter of the Week, splitting the honor with Point Park's Trevor Jones.
Meyer is coming off a big weekend at the plate where he went 4-9Â (.444) with a double and five RBI, seeing action in three of the four games. He would be the team's designated hitter in each of their three wins during the week, driving in at least one run in each of those wins against the Bobcats. The Cardinals have been looking for clutch hitting this season, and Meyer provided just that, driving in both of his runs on day two with two outs. It raised his season average to .385, putting him second on the team, while also ranking second in RBI (29) and leading the team in home runs (5). The big weekend continued Meyer's modest four game hitting streak, and he has at least one hit in 15 of his team's last 16 games. He is hitting 18-49 (.367) during that stretch as he looks to continue his success at the plate.
His biggest showing of the weekend would come on Sunday, where he came up with a pair of clutch hits to secure a sweep of the day and a win of the weekend. The first came in game one when he stepped in with the Cardinals leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth. He would deliver, sending a two-RBI single to center field and gave the Cardinals some cushion with a 3-0 advantage. They would go on to win by the final score of 3-2 and he would have another opportunity late in game two. With Wheeling having just tied the game at 1-1, with two on and two outs. He would find the left-center field gap for a two-RBI double and put the Cardinals ahead 3-1. The Cardinal pitching would hold the lead and ended you winning by that 3-1 score to close out their fourth straight weekend win.
With Luke Meyer winning the honors, the Wheeling University Athletic Department has now had 44 student-athletes earn Conference Player of the Week honors. Meyer is the third baseball player to earn Player of the Week honors, joining Sebastian Khan and Gavin Millians, with Meyer earning his second honor of the season. Last week, Wheeling Men's Lacrosse athlete Riley Lincoln earned the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) Defensive Player of the Week award.
The Wheeling University Baseball team returns to action on Tuesday, April 14th, when they take on CAL-U with first pitch at 1 PM.
