Morgantown, W. Va. – After competing through the indoor season, the Wheeling University Women's Outdoor Track & Field team kicked off the Outdoor Season on Friday at day one of the Marty Pushkin Invitational. It was the throwers taking center stage at Mylan Park, with two Cardinals competing across two events. The day was led by an individual title as the Cardinals started our the season strong.
Leading the effort was Fenne Sienaert, who took the runway in the Women's Javelin Throw. The freshman was competing in her first outdoor event of her collegiate event. She would eclipse the 35 meter mark on each of her six throws, hut her top throw would come on her first attempt on the day. She would reach a distance of 38.23 Meter, putting herself on top to start the night. She was able to hold off Waynesburg's Natalie Double for the top spot throughout the night, picking up the win by 1.5 meters. It was a strong start for the freshman, who finishes just four meters shy of the NCAA Provo mark and bested the rest of the MEC top throwers by that same four meter mark.
The other Cardinal to compete in the day was Mariah Pelkey, who competed in the Women's Hammer Throw. She would pick up a top 20 finish to round out the day for the Cardinals, taking 14th in the field. She finished with a distance of 29.21 meters, putting her just inside the top 20. She would finish fifth among the MEC competitions in the field, rounding out the day strong for the Cardinals.
Day two of the Marty Pushkin Invitational is scheduled for Saturday, March 21st, with first events beginning at 10 AM.
