Wheeling, W. Va. – With rain scheduled in the Ohio Valley over the next couple days, the Wheeling University Softball team announced a change to its upcoming schedule. The team will push its Mountain East Conference (MEC) opening weekend back one day, and shift the action to the Highlands Sports Complex MOutdoor Field. They will open the weekend on Sunday, March 22nd against Salem at 1 PM at the outdoor field, and will follow that with a meeting against Point Park Monday at 1 PM.
The Cardinals wrapped up their final full weekend of non-conference play at the MEC/PSAC Crossover last time out. They would play four games against opponents from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), opening the weekend against IUP. It was the second meeting between the two teams this season, with IUP coming away with a 9-0 win. The Cardinals would settle down in game two, battling California University of Pennsylvania, where they were locked in a pitcher's duel. However, the Vulcans would come out on top in a 2-1 win and Wheeling would look to rebound on day two. They would open things up against Winston-Salem, and the offense exploded for 12 runs in a 12-6 win over the Rams. They nearly earned the sweep in the second game behind a powerful pitching performance from Kaylin Shields. The game sat at 0-0 heading to the eighth, however, Pitt-Johnstown would explode for four runs in the top of the eighth to secure a 4-0 win.
The Wheeling University Softball team kicks off their weekend on Sunday, March 22nd, when they host Salem at 1 PM.
