Queens, NC. - The Wheeling University Men's Rugby team (3-1-1) opened up their 7's season at the Queens cup hosted by Queens University of Charlotte. Over the weekend we had seven different scorers and three shutout victories.
Game 1 vs Kutztown
Wheeling's first game of the season ended in a 14-14 tie with tries from Mason Ziegler and Taku Musingwini.
Game 2 vs Indiana
Wheeling came back to game 2 with a resounding 41-0 victory over the Hoosiers. The scoring was headlined by Shadreck Mandaza with a hattrick. This weekend was Mandaza's first games back since his injury during the 15's season. Alex Nyamunda scored two tries in the game and Navin Couch added one of his own.
Game 3 vs Kutztown ll
The Cards took game 3 again in dominant fashion. It was a 51-0 win with another three score game by Shadreck Mandaza. Mychal Andrews scored a pair of tries and Lawula Bata scored one as well.
Game 4 vs Belmont Abbey
Game 4 would be the first time in 343 days that Wheeling would lose a 7's match. It was a 14-12 defeat where Alex Nyamunda scored both of the tries.
Game 5 vs Queens University
Wheeling wrapped up the day on a high note winning 24-0. Alex Nyamunda scored two tries in the game and Shadreck Mandaza and Mason Ziegler would score one try each. The usual suspects found the try zone for the Cardinals but they were also able to flex their depth and get deep into their bench in this game.
Shadreck Mandaza led the Cardinals in scoring with seven tries on the day with Alex Nyamunda was right behind him with six. Mason Ziegler and Mychal Andrews scored two tries each and Taku Musingwini, Navin Couch, and Lawula Bata scored once. The Cardinals outscored their opponents 142-28 in the five games played.
Wheeling will return to action March 21st at Ruck the Rock in Rock Hill, SC with an automatic qualifier on the line.
