Calabash, NC. - Three days of competition at the Brunswick Plantation and Golf Resort came to an end on Saturday with the final 18 holes of the Brunswick Open. The Wheeling University Men's Golf team would finish the three rounds of action with a score of 905, taking sixth place out of the 16 teams in the tournament field. The Cardinals had two golfers finish in the top 10 of the event, and three of their five team golfers, and five of their seven total golfers, finishing with a sub-80 score to round out the event.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was graduate student Sean Dobson, who finished out a consistent performance on the course. He would shoot even par for the second time in the tournament, finishing at 72, and finished third overall in the field. Dobson's day got out to a rough start, with a double bogey on hole one, but he was able to work his way back the rest of the way. He would add a birdie on hole five to get a stroke back, while paring on each of the remaining seven holes of the front nine. He sat at +1 at the turn and would continue his consistency with pars on holes 10 and 11 on the back nine. He would add another stroke to his score on hole 12, but finished strong with two birdies on the final six holes. His final birdie came on the 18th hole, allowing him to shoot his second par round of the spring season and round out a third place tournament to start the spring.
Finishing right behind him was Zak Collins, who lowered his score for the second day in a row, shooting a 73 to round out the event. He would drop two strokes off his round two score, and finished with a tournament high three birdies in the effort. His first would come on the front nine, balanced with six pars to sit him at +1 at the turn. He would go on a hot streak on the back nine, hitting par five times and birdieing twice on the first seven holes. He added two strokes at the end of his round, but finished +1 to take 36th overall. The Cardinal's other top 10 finisher was Federico Cobos Kallam, who finished eighth in the field after shooting a 76 on the final day of competition. The back nine would be where he shined, birdieing on hole 11, and finishing the round with five straight pars. His second birdie of the day would come on the front nine, and he supplemented that with five pars to finish the round.
Lodin Femoen would be the final Cardinal to factor into the team score, shooting an 80 to round out the event. He was consistent on the back nine, shooting par on each of the nine holes, finishing out the round strong. He would add five pars on the front nine, but finished at +8 before the consistent finish. The final golfer of the team portion of the event was Luke Wennberg, who finished with an 88 to round out his three days of competition. He had two pars each on the front nine and back nine, rounding out a tournament that saw him finish at 254. Makstr McIntyre and Elia Ekenes-Fosback would both compete as individuals in the effort, and both shot sub-80 scores. McIntyre would shoot a tournament best 76 on the final day, led by a front nine that saw him shoot par eight times. Ekenes-Fosback would add a 77 to round out the day, birdieing on hole two for his top hole.
The Wheeling University Men's Golf team returns to action on Monday, March 23rd, when they compete in day one of the CAL-U Invitational.
