Wheeling, W. Va. - Over their two games during the week, the Wheeling University Men's Basketball team (14-7, 9-5) scored a combined 186 points as they clinched their spot in the 2026 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Men's Basketball tournament. On Monday, the conference released their weekly Player of the Week honors, presented by The Healthplan, and it was the Cardinal's offensive leader that was honored. Senior Caleb Murray earned the MEC's Men's Basketball Player of the Week award, earning the award for the second time during the 2025-2026 season.
Across the games against West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins, the senior scored 48 points while shooting 54.5% from the floor and 47.6% from three-point range. It continued a hot string for Murray that has dated back to the Frostburg State game back on January 10th. During that nine-game swing, the senior has eclipsed the 20-point mark five times and is averaging 20.4 points per game during that stretch. Murray has helped create a strong 1-2 punch for the Cardinals on the offensive side, raising his scoring average to 15.5 points per game during the season. Along with his scoring during the week, he would add four rebounds, two assists, and two steals to round out the big week on the floor.
His biggest effort of the week would come in the Wednesday match-up against West Virginia Wesleyan. He would tie his career-high with 30 points on the night, while also being the Cardinal's most efficient shooter from the floor. He would go 11-19 (57.8%) from the floor, including a 6-11 (54.5%) mark from three-point range, while shooting 2-2 from the charity stripe. It was the second time this season that Murray has hit the 30-point mark this season, and he continued that efficiency into Saturday. He would finish the week with 18 points, and continued that efficiency with a 7-14 (50%) mark from the floor, while adding four long-range shots to round out the week.
With Caleb Murray taking home his second Player of the Week award of the season, the Cardinals now have had 31 student-athletes earn conference player of the week honors. It is the third time this season that a Wheeling Men's Basketball player has been honored, with Murray earning his second to join Ayden Goll in being honored. He is the second Wheeling student-athlete to be honored this week, joining Wheeling Baseball player Edward Mateo in being honored.
Caleb Murray and the Wheeling Men's Basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, February 11th, when they hit the road to face Fairmont State at 7:30 PM.
