Sole Bros. Shoe Drive Returning to Alma Grace McDonough Center Saturday

It was a familiar scene repeated countless times every summer in vans, SUVs and cars across the country. As Curtis Harrison IV and his teammates were traveling back from a basketball tournament in the summer of 2015, they began to discuss the latest shoes that were trending in the game. After a few minutes, an adult driving the car spoke up.

"You guys are lucky," they said. "There are some kids out there who don't have any shoes."

The teenagers were stunned. And silent.

"We couldn't imagine that there were people out there who didn't have a fresh pair of shoes to wear," said Harrison.

When they got back to their hometown of Cincinnati, the teammates decided they wanted to do something about what they had learned. And from there, a 501c3 known as Sole Bros Inc was born. Since that day, more than 7,000 pairs of shoes have been collected by the charity and donated to people throughout the world.

Harrison has traveled on many roads since then. Eventually, his path led him to Wheeling University, where he is now a senior forward on the Cardinals' men's basketball team. And on Saturday February 21, Wheeling University athletics and Sole Bros Inc will team up for the second consecutive year to host a shoe drive. Fans attending that day's men's and women's basketball doubleheader vs. Glenville State are encouraged to bring a pair of gently used shoes to donate to people in need.

Last year's shoe drive brought in nearly 100 pair of shoes that were then given out through the Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center in East Wheeling. The goal is to surpass that number this year.

"Our inaugural event was a success," said Wheeling head men's basketball coach Chris Richardson. "I think this year it can be even better. The people in Ohio Valley have shown time and again that they are willing to help our neighbors in need. This is another opportunity to do that."
