Wheeling, W. Va. - After announcing that Wheeling Head Volleyball Coach Christy Benner was adding Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations to her scope of responsibilities on Tuesday, the Wheeling Athletic Department continued its restructuring announcements on Wednesday. Wheeling University Head Baseball Coach Ryan Lewicki is adding the role of Assistant Athletic Director for Events and Facilities to his duties. With the added role, Lewicki will focus on making sure Cardinal Gameday Events run smoothly and working with coaches to ensure facilities are being maintained and used properly.
"Wheeling University is a special place and I am excited and honored to take on the role of Assistant Athletic Director for Events and Facilities," said Lewicki. "I look forward to helping create a professional environment at our home Cardinal athletic events, while also ensuring our teams have all their needs facilities wise. In the end, it will help both our teams and athletes grow while helping the department continue to grow into the future."
Under his new role, Lewicki will take the lead in scheduling Gameday workers for home athletic events while helping to ensure that the facility is maintained and ready for play. He has helped set up a program where teams across campus volunteer to help at each other's games, creating a sense of community among the players and their respective teams. Along with his role on Gamedays, Lewicki will also be responsible for the scheduling of facility use for both teams and outside events. He has helped in creating a scheduling process for the Weight Room facility on campus, and will now be ensuring that all teams across campus have equal access to facilities to best meet their needs on and off the field.
Lewicki is entering his eighth season as Wheeling University Head Baseball Coach in 2026, leading the Cardinals to a 138-160 record. He took over the program in 2019, and helped revitalize the sport on campus. After picking up 12 wins in his first season, Lewicki helped the Cardinals set the program's single season win record in 2021, going 27-14 overall and 22-9 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play, as they earned the MEC North Division Title. He was named the MEC's Baseball Coach of the Year that season, after leading the Cardinals to their first MEC Tournament appearance. He has led the Cardinals to the MEC Tournament three times over his tenure, with their deepest run coming in the 2023 season when they advanced to the semifinal round.
"Ryan Lewicki has proven to be an asset in Wheeling University's athletics facility and events management," said Wheeling University Athletic Director Carrie Hanna. "He is exceptionally organized and will enhance the Cardinal Gameday environments and everyday operations."
