Wheeling, W. Va. – The fall sports season is in full swing, with all 10 Cardinal athletic teams hitting the field. Before long, the leaves will change and a cool breeze will blow in, signaling the start of the winter Sports season. On Monday, September 8th, the Wheeling University Athletic Department will hold their Winter Sports Media Day, previewing the seasons for Indoor Track & Field, Men's & Women's Swimming, Wrestling, Women's Basketball, and Men's Basketball.
"After a successful Fall Sports Media Day in July, we felt it was important to continue this tradition into the winter season," said Sports Information Director Zack Zeigler. "It is another great opportunity to welcome the Wheeling community into the Alma Grace McDonough Center to celebrate the winter Sports teams. These athletes work really hard at their craft and it is important for us to highlight that work as they get ready to start their seasons."
Just like in the fall, the winter Sports Coaches will be set up inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center, where they will each come to the podium and give a preview of their upcoming season. First to the podium will be the Wheeling University Indoor Track & Field team, led by Head Coach Greg Schmitt. Schmitt, who took over this summer, is in his first season as Head Track & Field Coach and looks to build a strong program. The Wheeling Men's a Women's Swimming program will be next with both programs coming on the rise and with a new Head Coach at the helm in Will Hughes. Wheeling Wrestling Head Coach Shane Brown will step up next, as he continues to grow his wrestling program with a crop of new talent joining the current roster. The final two to take the podium on the night will be Head Women's Basketball Coach Ella Skeens and Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Richardson.
Just like the Fall Sports Media Day, all five Winter Varsity Head Coaches will be seated in the Alma Grace McDonough Center. The event will kick-off with an Opening Prayer from Father David Griffin and University President Dr. Dianna Vargo. With just under a month until the Winter Sports season officially kicks off, with the Wheeling Swim team heading to the West Virginia University Games on October 4th, each coach will come to the podium and give a preview of their program. Coaches will be available for media in attendance for 10 minutes following the addresses to go into more in depth interviews about their programs. In the fall, each of the Cardinal's 10 varsity sports did a similar event, drawing local media from across the area.
Fans or community members who are not able to attend the event in person can tune into the livestream of the event on MEC.TV. The Wheeling Athletics Social Media Channels will also be active, Tweeting out coaches comments and capturing the sights and sounds throughout the day. Fans or media who are looking for more information about the event can contact Sports Information Director Zack Zeigler at zzeigler@wheeling.edu.
