Wheeling, W. Va. - After playing in several Amateur tournaments throughout the summer, former Wheeling University Women's Golfer Emily Holzopfel qualified for the 2025 U.S. Women's Amateur Championships. This past week, she headed out to the Brandon Dunes Golf Resort in Brandon, Oregon, where she got the chance to compete against some of the top amateur golfers in the country. Holzopfel would combine to shoot a 148 (+4) over the two rounds of competition, completing her first amateur golf tournament on the National Stage and, despite missing the cut for match play, she continues her climb in the Amateur golf game.
The event kicked off with stroke play on Monday, August 4th, when Holzopfel took on the first 18 holes of competition. She would tee off the day on hole 10 and, after shooting three straight bogies to start the day, she would get on track with back-to-back pars on holes 13 and 14. She would finish the back nine hitting par on five of the final six holes and shot +4 heading into the turn. As she made the turn to the front nine, Holzopfel hit two more pars before hitting her first birdie on hole three to get a stroke back. She would add another birdie on hole five and would end the round sitting at +3 after day one. She was sitting in the event's top 100 and was looking to improve upon her score even further as the event went on.
Heading into day two, Holzopfel would need to cut two strokes off her score to advance to match play and she would start off strong. She once again teed off on hole 10 and would immediately take a stroke off her score with a birdie on hole 10. It would be the first of two birdies in the back nine, while Holzopfel added five pars in a row on holes 13 thru 17. She would finish the back nine shooting just one over par and needed to drop three strokes on the front nine. She started the final nine holes strong, dropping one stroke with a birdie on hole two and adding pars on the other five holes. She went into the final three holes sitting at par and would add one more stroke before back-to-back pars ended her round at 73 (+1). While she didn't make the cut for the playoffs, Holzopfel took advantage of her first run at the US Women's Amateur Championship.
The Wheeling University Women's Golf team reports to campus on Friday, August 15th, for the first day of fall camp. They will open the season on Thursday, September 4th, when they host the Wheeling Invitational at Belmont Hills Country Club.
