Wheeling, W. Va. – On Tuesday, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) released the standings for their annual Commissioner's Cup. The award honors athletic excellence across the conference's 11 member institutions and the Wheeling Athletics department scored 75.0 points in this year's standings. The Cardinals competed in 21 of the 23 MEC Championship sponsored sports, and the Cardinals last won the commissioner's cup during the 2014-2015 season.
The Commissioner's Cup is an annual award given out by the MEC recognizing the top programs in the conference based on athletic excellence. The standings are compiled using an "all-sports rating" determined by a formula that awards points to a school for its regular season finish equal to the number of teams per sport sponsored by the MEC, and divided by the number of sports offered by an institution. The final rating is a percentage of points acquired against the number of points available, with a bonus point given for winning the conference tournament in applicable sports. The Wheeling University All-Sports Rating was 0.3807107, with the Cardinals scoring 75.0 out of a possible 194 points across their 21 MEC-sponsored sports.
During the 2024-2025 athletic season, the Cardinals had seven teams qualify for their respective MEC Tournaments, with the Wheeling Volleyball team leading the way, earning the MEC North Division Championship. Along with the volleyball team, Wheeling Men's Basketball, Acrobatics & Tumbling, Women's Basketball, Women's Lacrosse, Women's Soccer, and Softball each qualified for their respective MEC Tournaments. The Cardinals also had three other top five finishes with Men's Golf (4th), Wrestling (4th), and Men's Swimming (3rd) each finishing top five in their respective team conference championship events. The Cardinal's 21 MEC sponsored sports are tied for most in the conference with Frostburg State, West Virginia Wesleyan, and Davis & Elkins.
The University of Charleston would win the 2024-2025 MEC Commissioner's Cup, finishing with an All-Sports Rating of 0.9594595 across 19 MEC Sports. They were followed by Frostburg State (0.6783439) and Fairmont State (0.6416667) to round out the conference's top three. The Cardinals last won the MEC Commissioner's Cup during the 2014-2015 season. The full standings for the 2024-2025 MEC Commissioner's Cup is listed below:
