Box Score

Elkins, W. Va. – As they begin their second run through the Mountain East Conference (MEC) play, the Wheeling University Women's Lacrosse team (5-5, 3-2) traveled to Elkins, West Virginia. The Cardinals brought out the offense, scoring 19 goals on their way to a 19-7 win to move to 3-2 in conference play. Five different Cardinals would score multiple goals on the day as they continue to make a push towards the MEC Tournament.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Sophia Cirone, who finished with five goals and one assist to tie for the team lead with six points. After the Cardinals needed just 20 seconds to get on the board, Cirone would get her day started on the very next possession. After the Cardinals won the draw control, Cirone would send the ball into the back of the net and the Cardinals would take a 2-0 lead. Four of her five goals would come during that first quarter, including a string of three straight goals from the 10:58 mark to the 7:59 mark of the quarter. Her final goal would come on an assist from Julia Daniels in the third period as she rounded out a big day. The six points and five goals were both season high efforts  with her lone assist coming on the Cardinal's first goal of the second quarter.

The other Cardinal to reach the six point mark was Klara Domachowska, who finished with three goals and three assists on the day. Domachowska would get her day started on the Cardinal's third goal, finding teammate Jovie Noack for the first of three assists on the day. Noack and Domachowska would connect again for the Cardinal's fourth goal of the day, before going on the offensive to end the quarter. She would score the final two goals of the quarter and by the end of the first quarter, Domachowska had four of her six points and Wheeling held a 9-0 lead. Her final assist came on the first goal of the second half, and she would round out the day scoring the 18th goal of the day in the final quarter. For Domachowska, it was her third 5+ point effort of the season as she led the Cardinals.

Finishing right behind Cirone was Paige Jankowski who set a new season-high with four goals on the day. With the Cardinals already in the driver's seat 10-0, Jankowski would get her day started at the 11:20 mark to make it an 11-0 game. She would end up being the one to seal the deal for the Cardinals with three of her four goals coming in the final 30 minutes of play. With 3:26 to go in the third, Jankowski took a pass from Rose and scored her second goal of the day to make it 15-4. She would score one more unassisted goal before the quarter was out to make it a 16-4 game heading into the final 15 minutes of play. She would end up scoring the final goal of the day for the Cardinals with 5:02 to play to get Wheeling to the 19-goal mark. The four goals tied her season-high as she rounded out a strong day.

The Cardinals had two other players finish with multiple goals on the day, with Jovie Noack and Trinity Rose each finishing with three goals on the day. Noack was the first on the day to get things started, scoring the team's third goal of the night off an assist from Domachowska. It was the first of two goals between the two as they helped the Cardinals getting out to a 4-0 lead. Her final goal would come in the fourth quarter as she marked her third goal of the day and rounded out a strong effort. Trinity Rose was the other Cardinal to hit the three goal mark, doing so in the second half. Rose would score the first Cardinal goal of the second quarter and added two more goals in the third quarter to round out her big day on the field.

The final Cardinal goal on the night came from Julia Daniels, who finished with one goal and one assist on the day. Giovanna Perkins would get the start in net for the Cardinals, making 13 saves on 20 shots faced for a save percentage of .650 on the day. In front of her, it was two of the Cardinal's leading goal scorers on the day that led the defense. Cirone and Rose would lead the way with three caused turnovers each to lead the defensive effort, while finishing with 12 and 11 ground balls respectively. The final caused turnover would be caused by Sarah Artzer, who finished with one on the day. With the win, the Cardinals dropped their magic number to two and set themselves up for a chance to clinch a playoff spot on Saturday.

The Wheeling University Women's Lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, April 12th, when they host West Virginia Wesleyan at 5:30 PM.
