Charleston, W. Va. - After a tough loss against Charleston in Charleston, WV, the Wheeling Women's Lacrosse Team (4-5, 2-2) will continue on the road to Elkins, WV to meet Davis & Elkins for the second time this season. The Cardinals plan to gain another win against Davis & Elkins on Wednesday, April 9 with opening draw at 4 PM.
Last time out, the Cardinals had a tough battle against Charleston. Charleston would lead the game by out scoring the Cardinals 7-1 in the first quarter. Once the second quarter began, it was a back and forth game with goals and turnovers. The Cardinals would be able to compete with Charleston the rest of the game, even outscoring them 4-3 in the fourth quarter. Due to Charleston's early lead, they would be able to hold control of the game and end it 17-10. The Cardinals are now 2-2 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) and in the third seed.
No matter the matchup, Trinity Rose doesn't fail to contribute to Cardinal points. Rose would acquire five points (three goals and two assists) and be the only Cardinal to help assist her teammates in finding the back of the net. Rose would also lead the Cardinals in ground balls and caused turnovers with having five for each. Sophia Cirone would go one-for-one on free positions and lead the Cardinals in draw controls with four. Maisy Latus would have the best save record of the game with an 86% save rate, while Giavanna Perkins and the other two Charleston goalies would have a 50% save rate.
The Cardinals will hit the road to Elkins, WV on Wednesday, March 9 for their second match against Davis & Elkins. Last time the Cardinals and Senators met, the Cardinals would dominate the whole game and end it 13-8 to gain their second MEC win. The Cardinals look to once again dominate the game against Davis & Elkins to gain their third MEC win after losing Frostburg and Charleston back-to-back.
With half of conference play being under their belt, the Cardinals will have four more MEC games matching up with each team (Frostburg, Charleson, Davis & Elkins, and West Virginia Wesleyan) one more time. Since the MEC only consists of six teams with women's lacrosse, the teams play each other twice to be able to get the minimum required seven regular season games. The sixth MEC team is Dominican University of California. Due to their location in California, they will not play any MEC teams and will automatically receive the number three seed in the MEC tournament. The Current rankings are as follows:
#1 Frostburg 4-0
#2 Charleston 3-1
#3 Wheeling 2-2
#4 Davis & Elkins 1-3
#5 Dominican 0-0
#6 West Virginia Wesleyan 0-4
Wednesday's match will be held at Nuttall Field in Elkins, WV. with opening draw being at 4 PM.
