Slippery Rock, PA. – After the women kicked things off on day one, the Wheeling University Men's Outdoor Track & Field team began day two of the Dave Labor Invitational. The team had two top 20 finishes in the effort, going against some of the top teams in the Atlantic Region. It was a big day on the track for the Cardinals as the young team continues to grow on the course and in the field.
Leading the way was freshman Magnus Polkner, who brought home both of the team's top 20 finishes on the day. His best showing came in the 1500 Meter Run where he finished 8th overall. He would run a time of 4:05.55, finishing just three seconds below the leader for the top spot in the field. The freshman ran in the second heat of the event, and would be the top finisher in the heat to start his day. Polkner would come back for the 800 Meter Dash later in the day and once again would take home a top 20 finish. He would finish 19th overall with a time of 1:59.03 and took second among the Mountain East Conference (MEC) competition. Polkner has been a leader in the distance events throughout the year and looks to continue that success.
The other top 20 finishes on the day would come from the throwers in both the shot put and the javekin throw. The top finish would come from Jered Rhodes as he took on the Men's Shot Put, competing in the event for the second time this season. He would take home 14th overall with a distance of 11.50 meters to set a new PR in the event. The other top 20 finish would come from the Javelin throw as Erik Berroa continues his progression in the event. Berroa would take 20th in the field, throwing a distance of 45.22 meters. It was the third time that Berroa eclipsed the 45 meter mark as he continues his progression in the event. The final field performance of the day would come in the Men's Shot Put when Gavin Harper made his debut throwing a distance of 9.39 meters in his outdoor track debut.
The other performances would come on the track with Jan Wray leading the way in the 100 Meter Dash. Wray would finish 33rd with a time of 11.27, and was one of three Cardinals to compete in the event. Caden Canning would make his track & field debut, running a time of 12.28 (71st) while Alonso Martinez took 73rd with a time of 12.36.
