Comeback Falls Short as Women's Lacrosse Falls to Charleston

Box Score

Charleston, W. VA. - After coming off of a lose against Frostburg, and a week to prepare, the Wheeling Women's Lacrosse Team (4-5, 2-2) traveled down to Charleston, WV to battle it out against Charleston on their senior day. The Cardinals would start off slow, slowly adding points to the board, but would fall short with a final score of 17-10. They are now 2-2 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) and have dropped down to third place.

The Cardinals would start the first quarter with winning the draw control and allowing Sophia Cirone to get a shot on goal. The wound would be wide causing a turn over to Charleston. This would then allow Charleston to get the first goal of the game at the 13:00 mark. The Cardinals showed their speed with winning the second draw control to allow Trinity Rose to find Jovie Noack, resulting in a Cardinal goal from Noack to make the score 1-1 at the 12:26 mark. The Cardinals would struggle to find the back of the net the rest of the quarter and lose in draw controls (1-6) after their one and only goal. The quarter would end 7-1 in favor of Charleston.

The second quarter would start with Charleston winning the draw control, but it would be a battle back and forth to find the back of the net. After six minutes of countless turnovers and no goals, Charleston would fire a shot to make the score 8-1 at the 9:40 mark. Charleston would again win the draw control, but with a caused turnover, Trinity Rose wouldn't let them have it for long. Rose would be able to pick up the ball to give the Cardinals a chance on attack. The ball would then find Cirone's stick for her to launch it in the back of the net to make the score 2-8. The Cardinals would again struggle to find the back of the net for the next five minutes, allowing Charleston to increase the lead by two. It wasn't until Maisy Latus saved a shot to make it a Cardinal ball that then allowed Paige Jankowski to add one for the Cardinals. The quarter would end 10-3 still in favor of Charleston.

After the half, the Cardinals would start off slow resulting in Charleston to score right off the first draw control at the 14:38 mark. The Cardinals would hold Charleston from scoring for the next three minutes, but Charleston would sneak in with another goal to make the score 12-3. This wouldn't break the Cardinals determination to get the ball on their side. Giavanna Perkins would save a shot to allow the Cardinals a look for a goal. They would have the ball on their end for almost a minute before Cirone would get put on the line for a free position shot. Cirone would add to the board to make the score 4-12 at the 9:38 mark. Charleston would answer back right away, but so would the Cardinals. Once again, they would hold Charleston for five minutes, but Charleston would eventually find the back of the net. With 3:46 left in the quarter, the Cardinals would use that time to get one last goal on the board to make the score 14-6 at the end of the third quarter.

With the final quarter underway, Charleston would start off with two goals right off the bat. The Cardinals wouldn't show fear and would win the next draw control to allow Klara Domachowska to get on the board. The Cardinals would handle the ball for the next two minutes, but wouldn't be able to find the goal in time. Charleston would gain the ball and immediately get it to their end to find their final goal of the game. Even though the Cardinals are down by ten, they still give their all to finish out the quarter. Charleston would allow the Cardinals to gain three more points to make the final score of the game 17-10, with the Cardinals falling to Charleston for the first time in MEC play.

Five Cardinals would contribute goals, with Trinity Rose gaining her sixth hat trick (3 goals in a game) of the season. Sophia Cirone, Paige Jankowski, and Jovie Noack would all give two goals, and Klara Domachowska would give one. Rose would also add to her ground ball and caused turnover count with five each. She would continue to lead the Cardinals in points with 37 (28 goals, 9 assists), ground balls with 30, Caused turnovers with 36, and draw controls with 41. Bre'ya Clopper would also gain her first two draw controls of the season. The Cardinals gave it their all, and will now prepare for their next MEC match up.

The Cardinals will hit the road again to take on Davis & Elkins in Elkins, WV Wednesday, March 9 with the opening draw at 4 PM.
