Wheeling, W. Va. - For the first time since the 2018 season, the Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team (8-6, 6-3) finds themselves in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) Semifinals. Before the game, the GMAC announced their annual postseason honors and three different Cardinals were honored for their success during the season. Attack Brenner Chase earned First Team All-GMAC Honors, while midfielder Mitchell Park and Defenseman Owen Worley each earned a spot on the Second Team All-GMAC List.
For Chase, it was his firstall-conference honor of his career as he took home the lone First Team honor for the team. He was the Cardinal's leader in both assists (22) and points (51) while sitting second on the team with 29 goals this season. Chase was regularly passing the ball around, and is coming off a career-best performance in the Quarterfinals, that saw him put up eight points (five goals and three assists). The senior attackmen earned GMAC Player of the Week honors once this season, and has scored five or more points four different times throughout the season. He finished fifth in the conference with 2.57 goals per game while finishing sixth in goals. He also added a seventh place finish in the conference in points and a seventh place finish in the conferencein assists. As they head into Wednesday's semifinal, Chase will look to continue his leadership for the Cardinals.
Starting off the list of Second Team honorees is Mitchell PArk, who is also taking home the first All-Conference honors of his career. Pak has been a consistent presence in the midfield for the Cardinals, starting each of the team's 15 games this season. He made his prresence known on both sides of the ball, finishing with two goals and one assist on offense, while adding four ground balls and a caused turnover on the defensive side. He has helped the Cardinal's clear the ball efficiently throughout the season, leading the team to an 81.9% (285-348) clip on clears this season. His two goals would come aaint Holy Family and Tiffin while his assist came in the battle with Malone. Park has also been a key part of the offense's passing game and looks to continue that success into the semifinals.
The final honoree was defenseman Owen Worley, who rounds out the list of First Time All-GMAC honorees this season. He finished second on the team with 20 caused turnovers this season, and added 19 ground balls to round out his effort. On his senior day, he would put together his top effort of the season, finishing with three ground balls and three caused turnovers on the defensive side of the ball. He would also make a big impact on the offensive side of the ball, where he would finish with two goals, both scored from beyond the midfield line. In total, he would finish with two goals and three assists on the season, while being among the conference's top defenders. HE would tie for fifth in the conference in Caused Turnovers (22) while finishing with an average of 1.57 Caused Turnovers per game.
With the Men's LAcrosse All-GMAC honors announced, the Wheeling Athletic Department has now had 54 students earn All-Conference honors in their respective sports. The most recent announcement was the Softball All-MEC honors, with Amber Morgan earning a spot on the Second Team All-MEC list. The Three All-GMAC honorees bets their effort from last season, when they had two award winners and is the most since the 2018 season, when they equalled that number.
