Morgantown, W. Va. – The final day of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships wrapped up on Tuesday at Mylan Park. The Wheeling Women's Track & Field team finished 10th overall with 26 points across the three days of competition, finishing with one MEC Champion. On the final day, the Cardinals had two top five finishers as they rounded out the conference championship action.
Leading the way was Keala McCurry, who won the lone MEC title in the Pole Vault, and was back for the finals of the 400-Meter Hurdles. She competed in the preliminaries back on Sunday and qualified with a sixth place finish to advance to Tuesday. As she told the track, she would improve her standing, jumping two spots in the standings, running a time of 1:04.80. It was a two second drop from her time in the prelims as she set a new PR for the third straight event. She picked up the event for the first time in over two seasons at the Otterbein Invitational and has improved her time with every run. She was just . 04 seconds away from getting on the podium as she looks to continue her success as they move to their last chance invitational.
The other top five finisher on the day was Tara Perry, who finished fifth in the Women's High Jump. She would start with a height of 1.45 meters and cleared it on the first try. She would need two leaps to clear 1.50 meters and that is where she would end as she took fifth place in the field. Perry rounded out her outdoor season strong as she moves on to the postseason schedule. The final event for the Cardinals would be the 4x400 Meter Relay, with Sophia Tomana, Sophia Zanieski, Gianna Bjorn, and McCurry would compete. The foursome ran a time of 5:00.58 to finish 10th in the field and round out the day.
The Wheeling University Women's Outdoor Track & Field team now heads to the postseason schedule as they prepare for the last chance schedule.
