Wheeling, W. Va. - On Wednesday, the Wheeling Women's Lacrosse team (4-3, 2-0) hosted Davis and Elkins for the first home Mountain East Conference (MEC) of the season. The Cardinals brought home another win in the MEC to make them 2-0 in the conference; and that ties them at first alongside Frostburg State (5-6, 2-0). The Cardinals will remain home for their match on Saturday, March 29 against Frostburg State with the opening draw at 1 PM.
Last time out, the Cardinals welcomed Davis and Elkins to Wheeling and showed them they aren't a team to mess around with. The Cardinals gained their second MEC win, with a final score of 13-8, to tie them at first in conference standings. Five Cardinals were able to find the back of the net, with three of them having a hat trick (3 goals).
Recording one of her best games of the season, Sophia Cirone was the top scoring Cardinal of the game with four goals. Cirone acquired her fourth 100% shots on goal average in a game, with four shots, four shots on goal, and four goals. She now has the third most points for the team, with 23 points; only six behind Trinity Rose (29), and one behind Klara Domachowska (24). Trinity Rose, once again, dominated the defensive end with six ground balls, seven caused turnovers, and four draw controls. Rose will continue to lead the Cardinals in ground balls (31), caused turnovers (31), and draw controls (33).
As the Cardinals prepare for their game against Frostburg State, they are looking to gain their third MEC win, but so is Frostburg. This game will be the first time Wheeling and Frostburg meet in MEC play, and it will be a battle for first place in MEC rankings. Frostburg State comes in with a strong attacking end and a couple more games under their belt than Wheeling, but it's nothing that the Cardinals can handle.
The Matchup
Wheeling and Frostburg State are meeting for the first time in program history on the Women's Lacrosse field when they meet on Saturday. Frostburg State made the jump to NCAA Division II in 2020, and have quickly rose up as one of the top programs in MEC Women's Lacrosse. Frostburg State enters the game sitting at 5-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play coming off winning the MEC Women's Lacrosse championship a season ago. The Cardinals look to take down the defending champions and make a statement in conference play
