Four Cardinals Improve Scores as Men’s Golf Wraps up MEC Spring Classic

Charleston, W. Va. - After kicking off their spring season with 18 holes on Monday, the Wheeling University Men's Golf team was back in action for round two of the MEC Spring Classic on Tuesday. The Cardinals competed across the final 18 holes of the event, and took 25 strokes off their team score from the first day of competition. Of the six golfers that took the course for the Cardinals, four of those would drop their day one scores and move up in the conference rankings.

The most dramatic drop started at the top with Sean Dobson, who dropped eight strokes off his day one score to finish +6 at 76. It helped improve his standing by 11 spots, climbing to 32nd in the field and 14th overall in the round. Dobson would begin his day on the #9 hole and picked up his first par of the day. It would be the first of five straight pars as Dobson moved onto the back nine, breaking the string with a birdie on hole 14. He would get that stroke back on hole 15 with his second birdie of the tournament to get back to even. He would add one more par on hole 17 and finished +2 on the back nine before completing the turn. After adding four strokes to his score over the next five holes, Dobson would end the day strong with three straight pars on holes six, seven, and eight to round out the day. He would jump 11 spots in the standings, to crack the top 35 and build momentum moving forward.

While it wasn't as big of a jump in the standings, Caleb Minson would take six strokes off his day one score, setting a new PR shooting an 80 over the final 18 holes. He had an even day, shooting +5 on both the front nine and the back nine, with his second birdie of the tournament on hole 13 of the day. However, he would see his best performance coming on the front nine, where he finished with six pars to finish at +5. While not factoring into the team score, Beau Velasquez would be competing as an individual and dropped six strokes off his score to set a PR shooting an 85. Velasquez got out to the best start of any Cardinal golfer on the day, hitting par on his first three holes before picking up his first career birdie on hole three. He would shoot a +5 on the front nine before finishing out his day at +10 on the back nine.

Finishing right behind Velasquez was Lorenzo Lupi, who finished 55th in the field after shooting a 90 in his final round. He would end up shooting +9 on the back nine, his best showing of either of the turns to round out his event. The final Cardinal golfer to see his score go down was Vladimir Zhang, who dropped two strokes off his score to shoot 92 in the final round. After not competing on day one of competition, Lodin Femoen was able to return to the course in round two. He tied for the second lowest score on the team, shooting an 80, to get his spring season started strong.

The Wheeling University Men's Golf team returns to action on friday, April 4th, when they compete on day one of the Ohio Dominican Invitational.
