Wheeling, W. Va. - On Wednesday, the Wheeling University Women's Lacrosse team (2-3, 0-0) battled it out against Indian University of Pennsylvania (IUP) for the first time in program history. On Sunday, the Cardinals hit the road to Buckhannon, West Virginia for their first Mountain East Conference (MEC) game against West Virginia Wesleyan with opening draw at 5 PM.
Last time out, the Cardinals faced a very competitive IUP team, but did not show any fear at the start. IUP put up two goals in the first three minutes of the first quarter, but the Cardinals were quick to answer with two of their own goals to make the score 2-2 with 6:58 left in the first quarter. IUP was quick to score again on a man-up opportunity after winning the draw, but that didn't stop the Cardinals from winning the next draw control and scoring right off of it to make the score 3-3 with 5:44 left in the first quarter. IUP would then score 7 goals in a row, until Wheelings Klara Domachowska found the back of the net half way through the second quarter making the score 10-4. The Cardinals had a tough battle against the Crimson Hawks, but unfortunately fell 20-6. The Cardinals look to break their three game losing streak against West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, March 23.
This tough matchup didn't phase Trinity Rose on the defensive side. Rose was able to lead the Cardinals in draw controls (8) and also was able to pick up 4 ground balls and have 2 caused turnovers. She also saw some action on the attacking end with one goal and 4 shots on goal. Rose is leading the Cardinals in stats with 18 points (13 goals, 5 assists), 19 ground balls, 18 caused turnovers, and 25 draw controls.
The other five goals came from Klara Domachowska (2), Sophia Cirone (1), and Macy Davies (1). Domachowska was the Cardinal leader of the game with 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist) and 2 draw controls. She contributed to the first 4 goals in the game by feeding the ball to Trinity Rose, and Rose finding the back of the net for the first Cardinal goal of the game. Domachowska then found the back of the net herself, with the help of Jovie Noack, to even out the score 2-2. It wasn't until half way through the second quarter when Trinity Rose was able to get the ball back in a cause turnover. The ball was successfully cleared to the Cardinal attacking end where Julia Daniels found Domachowska, and Domachowska found the back of the net for her second goal of the game.
The Cardinals hit the road for their first MEC game since 2019 against West Virginia Wesleyan. On the road, they look to end their three game losing streak and gain their first conference game win. The Cardinals go in with a strong attacking end with a shot on goal percentage of .750 and a shooting average of 11.4 goals per game.
