Wheeling, W. Va. – For the first time since the 2019 season, the Wheeling University Women's Lacrosse team (1-0, 0-0) was back at Bishop Schmitt Field. The Cardinals would come back with a bang, as they took down Allegheny College 22-9, finishing just two goals shy of the tying the program's single-game goal record. Along with the team's success, the Cardinals also had their leader make history, with junior Jovie Noack setting the single-game goal record.
The junior transfer would finish with 10 goals on the night, setting the new single-game goal record. She broke the former record of eight, held by former Cardinal Jessie Tufnell, that has stood since the 2015 season. Noack got her big day started right away, scoring two minutes into the contest to give Wheeling a 1-0 lead. It would be back and forth early on, and Every time the Gators would respond, Noack had an answer. She accounted for the first three Cardinal goals and helped tie things at 3-3 in the first. She added one more goal in the first and the first two of the second quarter to head to halftime with six. She needed just two more to tie the record and tied it with 7:32 to go in the quarter, making it a 16-7 Cardinal lead.
A minute and a half later, Noack would once again come storming down the field after a caused turnovers from Trinity Rose. She would execute the clear for the Cardinals and made her move towards net, slinging the ball into the netting. It would write her name in the record books. She further cemented her spot with a goal with 12 minutes remaining, and added one more assist to round out the effort. She finished with 12 points on the night, falling just one shy of the single game record. It was a strong start to her Wheeling career and she looks to continue leading the team through this tough non-conference stretch.
Noack was one of four multi-goal scorers on the day, as Sophia Cirone (2), Klara Domachowska (4), and Trinity Rose (4) each finished with multi goal efforts. After Noack got things started, it was Sophia Cirone who would keep things going, putting Wheeling ahead 4-3 on Noack's first assist of the night. Julia Daniels would follow with her first goal of the season before the quarter wrapped up and the Cardinals were out to a 5-3 lead after a quarter. Trinity Rose would get things started with the first of four goald to start the second quarter, and Cirone would round out her offensive day with a second goal that made it 7-3. Noack would get on the board three more times before Klara Domachowska scored her first goal to make it a 10-3 game with 12:08 to go in the half.
As the half went on, Trinity Rose continued her strong quarter, rattling off two more goals in the span of 20 seconds to bring her total to three for the day. Paige Jankowski and Noack would score the final two goals of the half and the Cardinals went into the locker room leading 14-7. After Noack broke the record, it was Domachowska who began the running clock with her second goal of the day. Trinity Rose scored her fourth and final goal to end the quarter, and Wheeling would take a 19-9 advantage into the final 15 minutes of play. Domachowska would score her final two goals of the night in the final quarter, bringing her total to four. Her fourth goal would bring the game to its final score of 22-9, as the Cardinals returned to the field with a win.
In total six different Cardinals what score at least one goal on the day, with Jovie Noack (10), Klara Domachowska (4), Trinity Rose (4), Sophia Cirone (2), Julia Daniels (1), and Paige Jankowski (1) all scoring on the day. Cirone would lead the passing game with four assists, and finish second on the team with six points behind Noack's 12 point effort. Maisy Latus would get the start in that for the Cardinals, finishing with nine saves on 18 shots on the day. Along with her strong day on offense, Trinity Rose would also lead the defensive effort with nine caused turnovers. Cirone and Bre'ya Clopper would finish behind her with four caused turnovers each to round out the day.
The Wheeling University Women's Lacrosse team returns to action on Friday, February 14th, when they take on Tiffin With opening face off schedule for 1 PM.
