Field Events Lead Cardinals at Ocean Breeze Fast Track Last Chance Meet

Staten Island, NY. - With just a week remaining before the 2025 NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field National Championships, the Wheeling University Women's Indoor Track & Field team made a trip to Staten Island, New York in their final chance to qualify for Nationals. The Cardinals would sent two of their top field athletes to the event and, while neither were able to hit the NCAA provo mark, the Cardinals had two top ten finishes on the day. They will now have to wait to see if they have any qualifiers to the event as they make preparations for outdoor season.

It was the throwing events that would lead the way with Mariah Pelkey competing in the Women's Shot Put. Pelkey, who missed the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Championships due to injury was back in the circle and started things out strong with a throw of 8.13 meters. She eclipsed the nine-meter mark on her next throw, reaching  9.08 meters, and would advance to the finals of the event. She would get three more throws, and once again got over nine meters on her fifth throw, hitting 9.01 meters. However, it was her final throw that stood as the longest, as she tossed 9.22 meters. It was enough to put her seventh overall in the event, her highest individual finish of the season, as she rounded out her indoor season and is preparing to get back at it during outdoor season.

The other competitor for the Cardinals on the day was Keala McCurry, who took on the Women's Pole Vault. She was coming off the best performance of her career at the MEC Championships, and entered on the sixth height of the day at 3.33 meters. She would end up clearing the height on her first try, and would advance on to 3.48 meter mark. However, this is where her run would end as she missed the bar three times and would finish with that height of 3.33 meters, taking eighth in the field.

The Wheeling University Women's Indoor Track & Field team will now wait to see if they have any qualifiers to nationals as they prepare for the 2025 Outdoor Track season.
