Women’s Lacrosse Keeps Rolling on the Road with Trip to Shepherd

Wheeling, W. Va. - After a slight blip in their schedule with the cancellation of Wednesday's game, the Wheeling University Women's Lacrosse team (2-0, 0-0) is back in action on the road Saturday. The team will play their third road contest of the season as they travel to Shepherdstown, West Virginia to take on Shepherd with opening face-off at 1 PM. The Cardinals look to end the road trip on a high note as they prepare for their return home after spring break.
Last time out, the Cardinals traveled to Tiffin University for their first road game since the program's return. After falling behind 2-0 over the first four minutes of play, the Cardinal's offense got going, scoring five straight goals to open up the scoring to 6-2. They would lead 7-3 by the end of the first quarter and maintained their four-point lead into halftime, trading four goals with the Dragons. With the halftime score sitting at 9-5, the Cardinal offense came out scoring again as they put up the first three goals over the first six minutes of the half to make it a 12-5 advantage. However, Tiffin was not yet done, scoring seven of the next eight goals and making it a 13-12 game with 6:46 to play. Wheeling would be able to survive the late surge, outscoring Tiffin 4-2 over those final six minutes and held on for a hard fought 17-14 win.
After starting the season as the Mountain East Conference's (MEC) Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week in week one, it was Trinity Rose's offense that led the way in game two. Rose would finish with a team-high four assists to go along with three goals for a total of seven points in the contest. Of her seven shots taken on the night, five of those would be on goal, with three of those five finding the back of the net. The sophomore also continued to play her part in the midfield, leading the team with seven draw controls and adding one ground ball to finish out her day. Rose currently sits second on the team in both goals (7) and points (11) this season, while tying for the team lead with four assists. She looks to continue to be an impact player for the Cardinals as the continue their comeback season.

The Cardinal's leading scorer on the day was Sophia Cirone, who set a career-high with four goals in the contest. After showing off her passing skills in the first game, Cirone was the Cardinal's most efficient shooter in game two, putting four of her five shots on the night on goal. Cirone also played a large role on defense, tying for the team lead with three caused turnovers and adding a team-high four ground balls to lead the way. For the second straight week, the Cardinal's earned MEC Player of the Week honors, with Maisy Latus earning MEC Defensive Player of the Week honors. She did her part to help the Cardinals earn their second win of the season, making 13 saves on 27 shots faced to finish the day with a .481 save percentage. Three of those saves came in the final 15 minutes of play as she helped the Cardinals secure the win.

As they continue through their non-conference schedule, the Cardinals have been led by a high-scoring offensive attack. Through two games this season, the team has scored 39 goals while shooting 51.3% from the field. The Cardinals currently rank as the second highest scoring offense in the MEC with 39 goals and an average of 19.50 goals per game, while sitting as the second most efficient shooting team behind Frostburg State. After going on the road Saturday, the Cardinals will play each of their next two non-conference games at home as they prepare for the 2025 MEC Women's Lacrosse stretch. The Cardinals look to keep their winning ways going as they fight their way back to the 2025 MEC Women's Lacrosse Tournament.
