Androniki Chrysafi to Represent Wheeling Women’s Swimming at Greek Open National Championships

Wheeling, W. Va. - As the winter break rolls on, the Wheeling University Men's and Women's Swimming teams are preparing to come back for a strong second half run. After having men's swimmer Felix Norlin compete in the Swedish Short Course Nationals a week ago, the Cardinals will have another swimmer taking to the National Stage this upcoming weekend. Freshman women's swimmer Androniki Chrysafi will compete at the Greek Open Nationals, running from Friday, December 19th, to Sunday, December 21st.

"I am grateful to be back home, and excited to compete at the Greek Open National Championships," said Chrysafi. "I am excited for the opportunity to compete against the best of the best in my home country and I am focused on doing the best that I can over the three days of competition."

It will be the first time competing in the Greek Open National Championships, but Chrysafi is no stranger to competing on the national stage. She has been competing in national age-group championships since she was 13 years old, and will now get to compete against some of the best swimmers in her home country. The event is part of the national competitive calendar to develop elite performance and select athletes for international aquatic competitions. Chrysafi will get the chance to compete against some of the top swimmers in the country, swimming across four different events. She will compete in the 50-Meter, 100-Meter, and 200-Meter  Backstrokes, and will possibly see time in the 100-Meter Freestyle.

Chrysafi has burst onto the scene with the Cardinals during her freshman year, becoming one of the top swimmers in the class. She has averaged 504.05 points across the team's first seven meets, taking home nine top three finishes across those meets. Her biggest success has come in the dual and tri meet field, where she has picked up eight first place finishes. Her top event this season has been the backstroke, where she currently leads the Cardinals in the 50 (25.07), the 100 (1:00.48), and the 200 (2:13.84) in the event. She ranks as the 21st best swimmer on the women's side in the Mountain East Conference (MEC), and earned the Conference's Weekly Women's Swimmer of the Week honors on November 17th after picking up two individual wins and a relay win on the day.

The 2025 Greek Open Nationals will begin on Friday, December 19th, with prelims in the morning, followed by evening swims that night.
