Glenville, W. Va. - The Mountain East Conference (MEC) South portion of the Wheeling University Women's Soccer team's (2-7-4, 1-5-4) schedule came to an end on Sunday. The Cardinals made a trip down to Glenville State, and were locked in a defensive battle throughout the 90 minutes. It would end up being a goal in the game's 48th minute that made the differences as the Cardinals would fall 1-0, taking their fifth conference loss of the season.
Deetya Satyal would make her fifth straight start for the Cardinals, and would be tested early on in the game. She would face her first shot in the game's second minute, and was able to make the early save. Glenville State would take the first two shots of the game over the first three minutes, but the Cardinal defense forced the second shot to sail over the crossbar. Wheeling would then go on the attack, taking their first shot in the game's 11th minute. Graceylyn Hanna would send it just to the right of the goal, and the Cardinal's first shot on net would come six minutes later. After a Glenville State foul, Wheeling's Rosie Caley would try and sneak the ball into the lower right corner of the net. However, Glenville State's Lucia Lopez would dive to her left to make the save and the game remained at 0-0 as the 20th minute came and went.
Before that 20 minute mark, Satyal would be tested once again in the 18th minute, when Glenville State's Emma Moreno sent the ball on net, but made the save to keep it scoreless. The Cardinals would not get a shot off over the final 28 minutes of the first half, and the back line defense would only allow one Pioneer shot over that span. It would come in the 38th minute after a foul on Maira Alevato gave the Pioneers possession. Their shot would sail over the crossbar, and the teams would head into the halftime break with the score remaining tied at 0-0. The Cardinals were outshot 6-2 in the half, but the back line only allowed two of those six shots to land on net. Satyal would make two saves in the half, and looked to continue her strong play in the second half.
However, Glenville State would take the ball to start the second half and would need just three minutes to go on the attack. It was Solares Solano who brought the ball up the field, and she was able to sneak the ball by Satyal to give Glenville State a 1-0 lead. After letting up the goal, Wheeling would call on Akyla Walcott to finish the game, giving her her first action since getting injured back on October 5th. After Glenville State sent their next shot off goal, Lily Hanna and Caryn Goins would each take shots over the next ten minutes, with both ending up missing the mark. Hanna would add one more shot off goal in the 63rd minute, and Walcott would be put to the test as the 75th minute ticked by.
It would come in the 77th minute after a pair of offside calls on the Cardinals as Solares Solano would try twice to double her goal total. The first shot came in the 77th minute, and Walcott dove to her right to make the save and she faced the same attack three minutes later and was once again there to save the shot. Walcott would face a total of four shots in the final 42 minutes of play, and made all four saves to keep the Pioneers right where they were with a 1-0 lead. The Cardinal's last attack would come with four minutes remaining, as Wheeling took three shots at the end of the game. Two of those three came off of corner kicks, with Ainslie Reuben taking the first, and being denied by Glenville State's Lucia Lopez. On the next corner kick, Lily Hanna would send a shot off next, but Talia Salvador was there for the rebound, but was once again denied by Lopez. In the end, Wheeling fell 1-0 and took their fifth conference loss of the season.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was the strong work in net from the combination of Akyla Walcott and Deetya Satyal. Satyal got the start and made two saves on three shots faced, while Walcott played the final 48 minutes making four saves on four opportunities. Offensively, the Cardinals were led by Lily Hanna and Caryn Goins, who each took two shots on the night. Rosie Caley and Talia Salvador would take the two shots on net for the Cardinals, rounding out the effort.
The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, October 22nd, when they host Salem with kick-off at 4 PM.
