Wheeling, W. Va. – The second half of Wednesday's Cardinal Soccer doubleheader saw the Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (3-7-4, 1-5-4) take the field to round out their non-conference schedule. They put on an offensive display as they took down Salem 10-0. Seven different Cardinals scored goals on the day, while 11 different Cardinals finished with at least one point in the winning effort.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was Graceylyn Hanna, picked up her first collegiate hat trick in the effort. The Cardinals had several opportunities early in the game, taking slingshots over the first 17 minutes, but it was Hanna who got them on the board. She would take a pass from her sister Lily Hanna, And put it in the top right corner of the net. Give Wheeling the 1-0 lead. We only came out for the second half, it was once again Graceylyn Hanna that got them going and set them up for eight second half goals. In the 47th minute, Ana Santos would send the ball to the outside and Hanna would pick it up for her second goal of the day. It was Wheeling's seth goal of the night and, After six more Cardinal goals, Hanna would get the chance to cap off the hat trick. Her opportunity came in the 79th minute as Mikayla Young sent a long pass down the field and, after working past two defenders, Hanna found the back of the net to complete the hat trick. She now leads the team with three goals this season, and looks to build off the momentum of a big night.
After Hanna got the first half scoring started Maira Alevato would grab the second goal of the game in the 37th minute. It came on an assist from Hanna, and sent Wheeling into the break with a 2-0 advantage. Wheeling would go on to score eight goals in the second half, fueled by the first multi goal effort from Jeannery Diaz. With the Cardinals holding a 5-0 lead, Gabby Bortolussi would bring the ball up field and dumped it to Diaz. She was able to complete the play, scoring her first collegiate goal and extending Wheeling's lead to 6-0. Just three minutes later, the Cardinals were back on the attack, this time with Alaitz Irasuegui Urutxurtu brought the ball up the field. She sent the ball to Diaz, who was waiting in the center of the net, and put her second goal of the game into the net. It was her first career multi-goal game as she helped jump start the Wheeling second half attack. Along with Diaz, the Cardinals had two other players score their first collegiate goals in the effort, as the bench would make their presence felt.
After Hanna got the second half scoring started, Rosie Caley would put her second goal of the season into the back of the net to give Wheeling a 3-0 lead. Two minutes later, it was Lily Hanna's turn to get on the scoresheet as she chased a long pass down field. Hanna would send the ball towards net and it bounced around the Tigers goalkeeper and into the back of the net. With Wheeling staked to a 5-0 lead, Head Coach Ryan Wall would send in his bench, subbing out nearly the entire lineup with players looking to take advantage of their opportunity to shine. Diaz would be the first to take advantage of the opportunity, scoring her two goals, and the Cardinals would change up the lineup. Jersey Scyoc, who normally plays on the team's back line, stepped up on offense, taking four shots through the first 75 minutes, and put two of those on net. As the 76fh minute hit, she got her opportunity, taking a pass from Bortolussi in front of the net.
She would send it into the top right corner and netted her first collegiate goal to make it an 8-0 Cardinal lead. After Graceylyn Hanna finished up her hat trick, the Cardinals would get one more score on the board in the 84th minute. With two assists already under her belt, Bortolussi would take advantage of a scoring opportunity on a pass from Nahia Cernado. She would send the ball past the keeper, and scored her first goal of the night, bringing the score to 10-0 in favor of the Cardinals. For Cernada, it was her first collegiate assist as she rounded out the scoring on the day. The Cardinals outshot Salem 42-1, finishing nine shots shy of the program record for shots taken in a game. Of those 42 shots, 26 would land on net, making them just three shots on goal shy of the single game record. Wheeling would pick up their third win of the season And look to use it as a catalyst into their final MEV North stretch.
The Cardinals were led by Graceylyn Hanna, who set a career high with seven points in the contest. She finished with three goals and one assist in the effort as she finished out her first career hat trick. Jeannery Diaz was the other Cardinal to finish with multiple goals, adding two in the effort, while Gabby Bortolussi finished with four points, scoring a goal and adding two assists. Lily Hanna would add four points of her own, finishing with one goal and two assists, while Maira Alevato, Rosie Caley, and Jersey Scyoc each scoring goals on the night. Mikayla Young, Ana Santos, Alaitz Irasuegui Urutxurtu, and Nahia Cernada would round out the scoring, finishing with one assist each. Deetya Satyal and Chantal Marie Klingenburg would split the game in net, with neither facing a shot on goal on the night.
The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team returns to action on Sunday, October 26th when they travel to Fairmont State with kick-off at 1 PM.
