Wheeling, W. Va. - Coming off the momentum of a 1-1 tie with the University of Charleston on Sunday, the Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (2-6-4, 1-4-4) were looking to keep things rolling at home. The Cardinals welcomed West Virginia Wesleyan, and had their offensive opportunities throughout the night, outshooting the Bobcats 11-10. However, the opportunities would fall just short as the Cardinals dropped a 3-0 contest at home to move to 1-4-4 in their MEC schedule.
Coming off the opening kick-off, it would be the Bobcats that pushed the ball up field, taking the first two shots of the game over the first 10 minutes. Wheeling's first shot would come from Caryn Goins in the 18th minute, as she set a shot wide of the net. Neither team was able to control the ball possession over the first 20 minutes of the game, with the ball going back and forth between the team's midfielders. It wouldnt be until the 24th minute that the first shot would be on net as West Virginia Wesleyan lined up for a free kick following a foul on Goins. They would send the shot towards the bottom right corner of the net, but Deetya Satyal was there for the save and the game remained deadlocked at 0-0 as the 25 minute mark ticked away.
As the half went on, neither team was able to push the ball up the field with no shots being taken over the next 13 minutes. In the 38th minute, the Bobcats would take their second shot of the day as Isabella Mazza tried to send a free kick just inside the crossbar. Satyal would get into the air and made the save as the game remained tied at 0-0. That would change on Wheeling's third shot of the second half as the Cardinals took three shots over the first 12 minutes. Graceylyn Hanna and Lily Hanna would each send shots off target, before Rosie Caley brought the ball up the field in the 57th minute. She would try to get the ball into the bottom right corner of the net, but Wesleyan's Maite Coutinho would make the save and the Cardinals would continue to trail 1-0. The Cardinal defense would not allow a West Virginia Wesleyan shot over the first 19 minutes of the new half, but in the 64th minute they would make their first shot count.
It would come following a corner kick opportunity as the Bobcat's Isabella Mazza lined up in the far corner. She shot the ball towards the middle of the net and Ice was there to finish the play. She headed the ball into the top corner of the net and gave West Virginia Wesleyan a key insurance goal. They would possess the ball for the next ten minutes and got on the board once again in the game's 76th minute. Leading the way for the Cardinals was Caryn Goins, who continues to take advantage of being pushed into the forward position. She led the team with four shots on the day, putting two of those on net in the effort. The only other Cardinal with multiple shots in the effort was Gabby Bortolussi, who finished with two shots, neither of which landing on net. Five different Cardinals would finish with one shot, with Rosie Caley being the only one of those players to put one on net. Deetya Satyal would get her third straight start in net, making three saves on six shots faced on the night.
