Brexel, OH. - After taking time off for the winter break, the Wheeling University Men's Indoor Track & Field team returned to action on Friday. They kicked off the 2025 portion of the indoor season on Friday when they traveled to the Capital Alumni Invitational, hosted by Capital University. Wheeling started the new year strong, crowning one individual champion, while the young team continued to improve their numbers from the YSU Icebreaker.
The lone gold medal of the day would come in the 400-Meter Dash courtesy of senior Joshua Boehm. Boehm, who has been one of the top 400-Meter runners in the conference, battled two runners from Ohio Dominican University, and would take the top spot by just over a full second. He would post a time of 50.76 seconds, to set a high bar in what was his first run of the 2024-2025 season. The other Cardinal to take the track on the day was Drew Pierce, who competed in both the 200 and 60-Meter Dash. His top finish came in the 200-Meter Dash, where he finished fourth with a time of 25.56 seconds, and he added a 13th place finish in the 60-Meter Dash with a time of 8.01 seconds.
In the field events, it was Kabwe Bwalya who would lead the way, picking up top five finishes in each of the three jumping events on the day. He began the day in the Men's Long Jump, competing in the event for the first time this season. He got his day started strong, leaping a distance of 5.75 meters to finish second in the event and just .65 meters away from his PR. Up next was the Men's Triple Jump, where Bwalya was back at it, competing in the event for the second time this season. He would earn another second place finish, this time reaching a distance of 12.94 meters, falling .29 meters short of his first performance. His final event of the day would be the Men's High Jump, where he rounded out the day finishing third with a height of 1.70 meters, just .05 meters away from his PR.
The final competitor for the Cardinals on the day was thrower Tristen Tuttle, who competed in the Men's Shot Put. Tuttle would take sixth overall at the event, tossing a distance of 10.30 meters to round out the day.
The Wheeling University Men's Indoor Track & Field team returns to action on Friday, January 17th, when they compete at the Al Campbell Invitational, hosted by Akron.
