Women’s Soccer Drops Road Trip Finale at Frostburg State

Frostburg, MD. – The two game Mountain East Conference (MEC) road trip came to an end for Wheeling Women's Soccer (1-4, 1-2) as they made the trip to Frostburg, Maryland. The Cardinals offense was able to keep up with the Bobcats early, but they couldn't find the back of the net as they fell 4-0. Wheeling took eight shots over the first 45 minutes of play, putting four on goal, but they couldn't tick the scoreboard to finish out the day.

It would be Wheeling that got the offense going in the game as they went on the attack in the fifth minute. Mary DiFonzo, who would end as the team's leading shot taker in the game, put a shot on net in the fifth minute, but Frostburg State's Katie Sterne made the save to keep Wheeling off the board. A minute and a half later, Olivia Kqira would make her first save of the day on a shot from Frostburg State's Jayme Sooy. In the game's 11th minute, the Cardinals would send two.more shots on net courtesy of Olivia Hoban and DiFonzo, but it would be Frostburg State who broke through in the 20th minute. Mollie Rebuck would score the unassisted goal and Frostburg State would take a 1-0 lead. Each team would put one shot on net the rest of the half, but both goalkeepers made the save to keep it a 1-0 game.

Wheeling was outshot 11-8 in the half, but was efficient putting four of their eight shots on net. They remained within striking distance of the Bobcats and tried to get on the board in the second half. Frostburg State was the aggressor coming out of the break, putting four shots off in the first 10 minutes. Olivia Kqira would make the save in the 53rd minute, but in the 54th minute Frostburg State would get on the board to make it a 2-0 Bobcat lead. Makenzie Alonso would take the pass from Morgan Mrzinek and Wheeling had some work to do. Frostburg State added two more goals in the 61st and 64th minutes as they doubled their lead to 4-0 with 26 minutes to play. DiFonzo would get the final Cardinal shot off of the day as they fell by the final score of 4-0 and dropped to 1-2 in MEC play.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Mary DiFonzo, who finished with five shots, two on goal, on the day. DiFonzo would account for more than half of the Cardinal's offense on the day as she continues to be a leader for the Cardinals. Olivia Hoban would add two shots, one on goal, while Lily Hanna and Theresa Markwei each got shots off on the day. Olivia Kqira for the start in net and made five saves on nine shots to round out the Cardinal's defensive effort. With two big home matches this week, Wheeling is looking to bounce back and get back in the win column on their home field.

The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, September 25th, when they host Salem with kick-off at 4 PM.
