Wheeling W. Va- The Salem Tigers walked into the home of the Wheeling Cardinals (2-4), (2-1), knowing it would be a tall task to achieve their first win of the season on the road. The Cardinals' offense made this objective impossible, as they commanded the stat sheet, recording 29 shots on goal and 51 total. The Wheeling offense emerged victorious with a final score of 6-0.
The Cardinal's attack showed early. They hemmed the Tigers into their zone, and it was unique to see the opposition cross midfield with possession of the ball all game long. Wheeling created plenty of scoring opportunities, but the solid goaltending of Salem's Sarah Cabera kept things locked down. Finally, the offensive pressure caused the defense to bend when, at 14:54,
Mary DiFonzo broke the deadlock. The bounty of chances continued, but about 15 minutes later,
Lily Hanna proved her hype. She placed her shot beautifully in the top right corner, and the ball curved into the net at the last moment, making it impossible to save. The Cardinals continued to test Cabera, but the score remained 2-0 until the 35th minute.
Graceylyn Hanna spotted DiFonzo wide open, running down the side. DiFonzo took the pass and capitalized on the opportunity to go up three before the half.
The second was much of the same for the Cardinals' overwhelming offense. They continued to create chances, which resulted in more shots.
Graceylyn Hanna took advantage of her time with the ball, adding another marker in the 50th minute. Wheeling continued their offensive onslaught when
Talynn DeBartolo, who was denied multiple times in the first half, took a shot from far out, and it went over Cabera's head for the fifth goal.
Nyah Smith capped off the impressive night with a goal in tight to make the final score 6-0.
Lily Hanna led the team in shots, with five on target out of 10 total shots. She also added a goal to increase her season total to four. DiFonzo scored two goals on eight shots, which excelled her to five goals on the year. DeBartolo ended her night with seven shots and her first goal of the season.
Graceylyn Hanna recorded a goal, an assist, and shot four of five on net.
Sam Faulkner made her season debut, playing 35 minutes in the second half.
Shamiah Proctor,
Jersey Scyoc,
Carla Busch,
Amayah Curry, and
Skyler Wynn all made their varsity debuts in the contest.
Wheeling Women's Soccer will play the second game of three in this homestand on Sunday, September 29th, when they take on the West Liberty Hilltoppers.
