Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Delo’s Strong Effort in Net Earns Men’s Soccer Draw Against Point Park

Pittsburgh, PA. The Wheeling University Men's Soccer (0-3-2, 0-2-1) went back into Mountain East Conference (MEC) play on Wednesday night as they took on Point Park for the first time as a conference foe. It was a night where defense shined as neither team got on the board, finishing in a 0-0 tie when the 90 minute clock ran out. Both teams earned a point on the night, and it was the work of Wheeling goalkeeper Daniel Delo that earned the Cardinals their first conference point of the season.

Over the first 45 minutes of play, it was an even match as Point Park held a slight shooting advantage over the Cardinals at 6-5. However, of the Pioneer's six shots in the half, five went on net as Wheeling goalkeeper Daniel Delo went to work. The Cardinals would take the first shot of the game in the 14th minute when Austin Nyanneh sent a shot on net. However, it was saved by Point Park's Ali David and Nyanneh's rebound shot would be blocked. Delo's first save of the half would come four minutes later as he denied Charoky Briard And kept it scoreless. Delo would make another save in the 21st minute and came through again in the 31st minute as the game remained scoreless. Delo's two biggest saves came in the final five minutes of the half, stopping the Pioneer's momentum right in their tracks.

The first came in the 41st minute after a Point Park foul as the Pioneers got the ball back. Point Park's Javier Morejon put a shot on net and Delo made the diving save to keep it a 0-0 game. Point Park would put together one more shot attempt before the half was up in the 44th minute, but Delo once again came through and the teams headed into the locker room with the score sitting at 0-0. Josh Timbrell and Antonio Herra-Blackwood each put shots on goal during the half, but neither were able to find the back of the net. The Cardinals would come out shooting in the second half with Jordan Taylor sending a shot that was blocked in the 50th minute, and Herra-Blackwood put his second shot on net in the 53rd minute. Delo would make two more saves in the second half, including a big save in the 83rd minute to brush off a final Pioneer push. As the clock expired, the score stood at 0-0 as both teams earned a conference point.

It was goalkeeper Daniel Delo who led the way for the Cardinals, making seven saves on seven shots faced to pick up his first collegiate shutout. With the effort, Delo raised his save percentage to .750 and dropped his Goals Against Average to 1.75. On the offensive side, Antonio Herra-Blackwood led the way for the Cardinals, putting both his shots on goal on the night. Josh Timbrell would add another shot on goal on the night while Jordan Taylor, Joergen Bjerkreim, Liam Perrson, and Luis Bravo each putting shots on net. The Cardinals picked up their first conference point of the season as they wrap up this three-game road trip this weekend.

The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team returns to action on Sunday, September 22nd, when they take on Concord at 3:30 PM.
