Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lone Goal Not Enough as Men’s Soccer Falls to Concord

Athens, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team (0-4-2, 0-3-1) wrapped up a three-game road trip Sunday with a trip to Athens, West Virginia to take on Concord. After an early Concord goal, Wheeling would get the equalizer in the first half, but it wouldn't hold up as the Cardinals dropped a 3-1 contest. The Cardinals continued to take efficient shots throughout the night, putting four of their seven shots on net, as they head home for a few big matches.

Concord came out on the attack, setting up their first offensive opportunity in just the seventh minute of the game. After a foul on Kudakwashe Chitani, Concord would bring the ball up into the offensive zone. Concord's Ted Roberts would find Syrus Connolly, who converted the first goal of the game to give Concord a 1-0 lead. The Cardinal defense would hold strong for the next 22 minutes, holding the Mountain Lions at bay. Wheeling would get their first offensive opportunity in the 28th minute, when Christian Ruud sent a shot off net. A minute and a half later, the Cardinals were back on the attack after a substitution. The first Cardinal goal would come following the subs as Andrew Gerbaldo worked around the defense and scored his first career goal as he tied the game at 1-1.

As the half went on, both teams' defenses stepped up, as shots were limited throughout the half. However, in the 36th minute, Concord would take back the lead when Concord's Kai Forsythe connected with Ted Roberts to put Concord ahead 2-1. That would be the score heading into halftime as the Mountain Lions took two more shots that would miss the target. Wheeling was able to keep up with Concord throughout the half, being outshot 6-3 and were looking to convert some of those shots into goals in the second half. The Cardinals would be the first one to strike in the second half as they put their second shot of the game on net. Andoni Oynesa would go on the attack, trying to put a shot over the goalkeeper but it was saved by Concord's Miguel Oliveira.

It took until the 76th minute when Concord broke through with their first shot on net of the half, but Daniel Delo would come up with the save to keep it a one-goal game. Just a minute later, Concord would end up getting what would be the goal that put the game out of reach. Darian Bradshaw would put an unassisted goal in the back of the net and Concord extended their lead to 3-1. The final two shots on net for the Cardinals came from Hallvard Falch, who couldn't sneak the shot in the back of the net as Oliveira made the save. The final shot would come just a few minutes later as Gerbaldo would try to convert his second goal of the day, but a save ended the day. Concord would end up winning by that 3-1 score as the Cardinals fell to 0-3-1 in conference play.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Andrew Gerbaldo, who scored his first collegiate goal on the night. He took two shots, putting both on goal, and added the only goal of the night. He was one of three Cardinals to put shots on net on the night with Hallvard Falch and Andoni Oynesa each adding shots on net. The final shot of the day came from Christian Ruud, who sent his lone shot of the night off net. In net, Daniel Delo would get the start and made two saves on five shots faced to round out the day.

The Wheeling University Men's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, September 25th, when they host Salem at 4 PM.
