Men’s Golf Sits Top 10 After Day One of Dr. Wally Edgell Invitational

Elkins, W. Va. – The All Mountain East Conference (MEC) tournament schedule pushes on for Wheeling Men's Golf as they competed on day one of the Dr. Wally Edgell Invitational. After 18 holes, the Cardinals find themselves in the top 10 for the second straight tournament, sitting seventh with a combined score of 624. The team got off to a strong start in round one, shooting a 302 to put themselves in the top five and followed that up with a 312 in round two to round out the day.

The Cardinals had a pair of golfers leading the way as Robin Duzmann and Ryan Courtney each finished tied for 16th with a two-round score of 151. It was Duzmann who had the upper hand early, shooting a 73 in the first round of competition. He got his day started strong with a birdie on hole one, and followed that with back-to-back pars on holes two and three. He added pars on holes seven and nine, and finished the front nine at +3. On the back nine, Duzmann really let it fly, with a birdie on hole 10, the first of two birdies after the turn. He would shoot par on the remaining seven holes and finished the back nine with a -2. However, in the second round, Duzmann would add five strokes to his score, shooting a 78. He would add two more birdies in the round and an even par on the back nine to finish his day.

For Courtney, he was the model of consistency throughout the day, shooting a 76 in round one, followed by a 75 in round two. In the first round, Courtney was the Cardinal's leader with six birdies and shot +2 on both the front nine and the back nine. However, his best showing was on the front nine in round two, when he shot +1 over the nine holes. He birdied on holes one and three to stay at par and added five more pars throughout the front nine. He would take a stroke off his score and jumped four spots to match with Duzmann in that #16 spot. The Cardinals had a total of three golfers in the top 30 on the day as Phillip Halvorsen finished 30th with a two round score of 155. He was the Cardinal's second leading golfer in round one, shooting a 74, and followed that up with an 81 in round two.

Lorenzo Lupi was up next for the Cardinals, competing as an independent for the second tournament in a row. He would finish 71st overall, with a two-day score of 167 and tied his PR in the second round, shooting an 80. The final two team scores for the Cardinals came from Lodin Femoen and Luis Alvarez. Femoen took 71st overall, shooting a 167, equaling Lupi's score. He set a new PR in the second round of competition, shooting a 78 after putting up an 89 in round one. He jumped 11 spots in the standings and took 11 strokes off his score. Luis Alvarez would round out the day for the Cardinals, finishing 79th, with a two round score of 172. He shot a 79 in round one before rounding out the day with a 93 in day two.

The Wheeling University Men's Golf team returns to action in round three of the Dr. Wally Edgell Invitational with tee times beginning around 9 AM.
