Men’s Golf Jumps Four Spots for Top 10 Finish at Charleston Golden Eagle Invitational

Wheeling, W. Va. – As they entered day two of the Charleston Golden Eagle Invitational, the Wheeling University Men's Golf team had a top 10 finish in site. The team would get the job done in round three, jumping four spots to finish 10th in the field with a three-round score of 901. Four of the six Cardinals who competed dropped at least one stroke off their round two scores to wrap up a strong start to the season.

Leading the way for the Cardinals on day two was Ryan Courtney, who took a stroke off his score, shooting a 72, and jumped four places in the standings to finish in a tie for 23rd overall. It was a strong front nine that propelled Courtney to the big day as he shot three straight pars to begin the round. However, it was on hole five that he made his move, picking up his first collegiate Eagle. It brought his score for the front nine back to even and he would add three more pars and a Bogey to finish +1 on the front nine. He got off to an even stronger start on the back nine, putting together back-to-back birdies to start. He would add one more birdie on hole 16 and ended up shooting an even par on the back nine to round out the day. The effort moved him into a tie for the team lead, shooting a three day score of 220.

He would end the day tied with teammate Robin Duzmann, who equalled Courtney's three-round score of 220. He ended up adding three strokes to his round two score, finishing with a 74 through the final 18 holes. The sophomore would finish with five pars on the day, hitting three on the front nine and adding two more on the back nine. The back would be his stronger showing, where he shot a +1 to round out a strong tournament showing. Rounding out the top three for the Cardinals was sophomore Phillip Halvorsen, who finished tied for 55th with a total score of 229. Halvorsen had his best round of the tournament in round three, shooting a 73 that included two birdies and 12 pars as he showed consistency throughout the day and had the biggest drop of any Cardinal.

Rounding out the team portion of the competition was frehman Lodin Femoen and sophomore Luis Alvarez. Femoen would shoot a 75 in round three, lowering his score by one from round two and jumping him six places in the standings with a total score of 232. Alvarez also made a jump in the standings, going up five spots with an 83 in round three. It was one stroke up on his round two scores, but was enough to get him into the top 100, taking 98th with a three day score of 249. Rounding out the field was independent competitor Lorenzo Lupi, who had the biggest position jump of any player on the team. He would jump 10 spots in the standings up to 87th overall with a three day score of 241. Like many of his competitors, Lupi would drop three strokes off his score as he wrapped up a strong collegiate debut.

The Wheeling University Men's Golf team returns to action on Monday, September 16th, when they head to the Dr. Wally Edgell Invitational hosted by Davis & Elkins.
