Wheeling, W. Va. – After 36 holes of competition, the Wheeling University Men's Golf team wrapped up the 2024 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Spring Invitational on Tuesday. The Cardinals would finish ninth in the team standings and added one stroke to their team score, shooting a 305, to round out the event. It was a big day for the All-Freshman lineup as the Cardinals head into their final two weeks looking to build off their success.
Leading the way was freshman
Robin Duzmann, who set a new PR and dropped four strokes off his score. He would shoot a 73 on the day to lead the Cardinal's fivesome, and jumped 12 spots on the leaderboard to finish 27th overall in the field. The effort helped lower Duzmann's spring average to 76.3 as he beat his previous PR by four strokes. Duzmann has now been the Cardinal's leader in each of their last two events as he continues his growth throughout the spring season. The other big improvement on the day came from MJ Darmawan, who like Duzmann was able to move 12 spots up on the leaderboard. Darmawan finished one stroke behind Duzmann, shooting a 84 on the day. Darmawan also dropped four strokes off of his score and brought his spring season average to 77.6 as he continues to improve on the course.
The final Cardinal to shoot a sub 80 score on the day was
Ryan Courtney, who finished with a 77 on the day. It was the first tournament this spring that Courtney shot with two sub-80 scores as he combined to score a 153 across the two rounds of the event. Rounding out the day was
Phillip Halvorsen and
Luis Alvarez as they rounded out the event. Halvorsen would shoot an 82 while Alvarez finished with a career-best 81 to round out the day. For Alvarez, it was a new PR effort as he continues to grow into one of the top five golfers for the team this spring.
The Wheeling University Men's Golf team returns to action on Monday, April 22nd when they compete at the West Liberty Invitational.
