Charleston, W. Va. – After competing against some of the top competition across the country in the first three tournaments, the Wheeling University Men's Outdoor Track & Field team turned to Mountain East Conference (MEC) play on Friday. They kicked off the University of Charleston Golden Eagle Invitational, with the track athletes leading the way. It gave the team a chance to see the competition they will face at the 2024 MEC Championships, with just under four weeks remaining before the event.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was
Joshua Boehm, who competed in two events on the day taking a first and a second place finish. His gold medal performance would come in the 200-Meter Dash as he continues his success in the mid-distance events from indoor season. He would run a time of 22.32 to take the top spot and earn his first win of the Outdoor Season. He would come back in the very next event as he ran the 400-Meter Dash. He would end up taking second in the field, running a time of 51.30 seconds. Boehm was a strong performer in the mid-distance events for the Cardinals during the indoor season and looks to continue that success as he continues through the outdoor season.
It was a heavy track day for the Cardinals and it would start with the 100-Metet Dash. Wheeling had two top ten finishes in the event, with
Calvin Blunt taking fourth (11.03) and
Damian Jackson finishing eighth (11.32). After Boehm's successful day, the 400-Meter Hurdles was up next as
Moses Koroma competed for the first time this season. He would just miss cracking the one-minute mark, finishing at 1:00.08 to take fourth in the field. The final three track events would come in distance as
Tyler Crook,
Izaiha Browning, and
CJ Anderson all competed. Crook would finish 33rd in the 800-Meter (2:35.82), Anderson took 13th in the 1500-Meter (4:39.43), and Browning took sixth in the 5000-Metet (15:28.39) to round out the day.
In the field events, the Cardinal jumpers were the lone competitors as
Kabwe Bwalya and
Daimar Ivey competed. Things started with the Men's High Jump, as Bwalya competed in the event for the first time this season. He would take ninth overall, reaching a height of 1.75 meters to start the day. Daimar I ey would take the top spot in the final two events, with the triple jump being his top event. He would take second in the Triple Jump, reaching a distance of 13.12 meters, while Bwalya take fourth at 12.45 meters. In the Long Jump, Ivey would finish 11th with a distance of 5.60 meters and Bwalya took 13th at 5.47 meters.
Day two of the UC Golden Eagle Invitational will begin on Saturday, April 6th, with first events beginning at 10 AM.
