Top of the Lineup Leads Push as Wheeling Softball Falls to Davis & Elkins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Wheeling, W. Va. – After earning their fourth straight series split on Saturday, the Wheeling University Softball team (8-36, 3-17)  was back in action Sunday at Davis & Elkins. The Cardinals made late pushes in both games, but were unable to overcome Davis & Elkins, as they were swept on the day. The Cardinals fell in game one 7-2 and came back in game one to fall 7-1 to round out the weekend.

Game One: Davis & Elkins 7, Wheeling 2

In the first game of the day, the Cardinals looked to carry their momentum from a game-two win on Saturday. After the first two batters of the inning we're retired, Anna Florczak would come through with a two-out single for the first base runner of the day. Madison Kay would reach first to put two on and two outs, but the threat would end there. Tessa Wise would get the start for the Cardinals and allowed a run in the first, but got into a jam with the bases loaded and two outs. However, Wise would limit the damage, getting out of the inning with a flyout to end the inning. After allowing that run, Wise was able to put up zeros in each of the next two innings, and the Cardinals threatened once again, loading the bases in the third. However, a two-run fourth inning would make it a 3-0 game.

The Cardinals once again threatened in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with two outs, but once again they couldn't push across a run. The Senators would hit their stride, scoring three in the fifth and one in the seventh as they built a 7-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh Tessa Wise would work the complete game effort for the Cardinals and was looking for her offense to keep the game going in the top of the seventh. Natalie Stoner would single to start the inning and an error on the Senators would allow Chyla Miller to reach, putting two on and one out Anna Florczak would ground out to move the runners to second and third and with two outs Brooke Slomkowski would pinch hit. She delivered a two RBI single to bring home both runners as the Cardinals made it a 7-2 game. However, that was the lone run scoring for the Cardinals as they fell 7-2.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Chyla Miller, who finished 3-4 with a run scored on the day. It was the first career three-hit game for the freshman as she has found a home in the #2 spot in the batting order. Brooke Slomkowski would drive in the two runs for the Cardinals, going 1-1 with a single and two RBI on the day. The Cardinals would look to bounce back in game two and earn their fifth straight doubleheader split.

Game Two: Davis & Elkins 7, Wheeling 1

In game two, the Cardinals sent freshman Ryleigh Peters to the circle as she makes her team leading 16th appearance of the season. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, she allowed a two out single before getting out of the inning. Davis & Elkins would put together their biggest inning of the day in the bottom of the second as they put up four runs and took a 4-0 lead through two innings of play. After a scoreless third inning, the Cardinals would get on the board in the top of the fourth. After the first two batters of the inning were retired and brought up Cassie Feyh with nobody on and two outs. Feyh would lift a solo home run and cut the Davis & Elkins lead to 4-1. It was her second home run of the season and got the Cardinals to within three runs of earning the split.

However, Davis & Elkins would add a run in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 7-1 game. Peters would end the game with a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning as she rounded out the day with a complete game effort. She would throw 6.0 innings of work allowing seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits, while walking four and striking out two. The Cardinals would try to make another late push in the top of the seventh, after the first batter of the inning was retired, Makie Paxson would get the Cardinals a base runner with a one out single. However, Paxson would stay on first base as the next two batters were retired and the game came to an end with Wheeling falling 7-1. The Cardinals would end the weekend 1-3 across the four games as they return home this week.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was senior Cassie Feyh, who finished 1-3 with a home run and the lone RBI. It was her second home run of the season as she handled her role as the team's clean-up hitter. Makie Paxson would have the lone multi-hit game of the day, finishing 2-3 while Chyla Miller added a 1-4 day in the two-hole. Miller would finish the day for 5-8 between the two games as she rounded out a strong day.

The Wheeling University Softball team returns to action on Wednesday, April 17th, when they host West Liberty with first pitch at 3 PM.
