Canton, OH. – Wednesday marked the start of four big days of competition as the best of the best from the Mountain East Conference (MEC) and Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) came together inside the C.T. Brannin Natatorium. They opened up day one of competition at the 2024 MEC/GMAC Swimming & Diving Championships, with the first 12 events. The Wheeling University Women's Swimming team kicked things off with a bang, picking up two All-MEC honors on the day.
Leading the way was junior
Jade Miller, who picked up her first MEC Championship of the event. She competed in the Women's 200-Yard Individual Medley and qualified for the B Final with a time of 2:15.63 in the morning. She would be competing against fellow MEC swimmer Jayme Meadows from Frostburg State and beat her out with a time of 2:14.54 to take 11th overall and claim the MEC Championship. It was the fourth individual MEC title of Miller's career as she started her championship week off with a bang. The other All-MEC performance came from
Gabby Baiano as she swam in the 1000 Yard Freestyle. She would be the top swimmer in the event after the morning, posting a time of 10:43.23. she ended up taking second in the conference, and sixth overall in the event, as she earned Second Team All-MEC honors.
While no other Cardinal swimmers qualified for the finals, the Cardinals had several other strong swims on the day. Freshman
Grace Moorley and
Chelsea McIntosh would each swim in their first conference championship events in the 1000 Yard Freestyle and finished 13th (11:13.17) and 27th (13:29.16) to get things started.
Marra Johnson and
Olivia Moyer joined Miller in the 200 IM, with Johnson finishing just outside the top 25, taking 29th with a time of 2:20.73. Moyer would take 33rd overall with a time of 2:23.54 while
Sofia Castillo rounded out the event in 35th at 2:27.98. The Cardinals rounded out the individual events with two swimmers in the 50-Yard Freestyle.
Caitlin Oltman led the way, taking 29th with a time of 25.91 while
Maria Jones took 40th at 27.38.
The final two events of the day were the 200-Yard Medley Relay and the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay. The team of Moyer, Johnson, Castillo, and Oltman took in the Medley Relay, and finished 8th overall and 5th in the conference with a time of 1:54.14. The day would wrap up with the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay as Moorley, Castillo, Miller, and Oltman took the pool They would finish 7th overall and 4th in the MEC with a time of 1:41.72.
Day two of the 2024 GMAC/MEC Championships kicks off on Thursday, with preliminaries at 10 AM and finals at 6 PM.
